california universities!

i will be applying in-state to the following:
-UC Berkeley
-UC Irvine
-UC San Diego
-CalPoly SLO

Asian Male (for the sake of affirmative action or the lack of)

i don't know how well known our school is because our city is right between affluent cities/schools, which usually overshadows us (Palos Verdes HS/Mira Costa HS/Redondo Union HS) but i am in the Torrance Unified School District

UC GPA: 4.05-4.1
Unweighted HS GPA: 3.71 (i think)
Class Rank: 47 out of 550-ish

Currently looking to apply in computer science under some liberal arts section
(colleges of letters and sciences, not college of engineering)

Completed AP's:
-Chemistry
-United States History

Completed Honor's:
-Geometry
-Biology
-Algebra 2
-English 2 & 3 (or 10 & 11)

-Math, 590
-Writing, 590
(Taken twice)
SATII
-Chemistry, 630
-United States History, 730
ACT w/Writing
-28 (I'm planning to shoot for a 30)
(Taken once)

Athletics
-3 Years of Volleyball

EC's
-Commissioner in ASB (third highest rank)
-Spent a week in the summer at USC learning about Energy Resources

Work Experience
-Spent a summer working for city in conjunction with my city and ExxonMobil

am i so totally screwed?

With that SAT/ACT score, Berkeley is out of reach. Shoot for 2050+ (or a 32, i think?) and you may have a chance there.

Try applying to other UCs as well.

You really need to retake your SAT1s and your SAT2s. Those scores do not make you competitive at all, and you need some way to make up for your not-so-good unweighted GPA.

thanks for your advice guys. yeah, i know i have to step it up now.
im going to focus on my acts and satII’s.
let’s hope an acceptance doesn’t get rescinded if you fail all of your ap tests senior year :/

oh yeah @sagert i chanced your friend.

Since you have taken the SAT twice now I doubt that a third attempt would result in significantly better scores. With a 590 in Math and a 630 in CR, realistically your only possibilities for a UC are UC Merced and UC Riverside. While Cal Poly SLO is a real reach, you might want to consider some of the other CSUs. The computer science programs at the better CSUs are probably at least as good as those at the lower tier UCs. With a GPA of 3.7 and a combined CR+M SAT score of 1,220 you should have little trouble getting admitted to the CSU that covers your service area or any of the other non-impacted CSUs.

If you are determined to go to a mid or upper tier UC you might want to consider going to a CCC, earning a very high GPA and then transferring to a UC after two years. If you can achieve a 3.7 GPA at a CCC and get most of your pre-requisites done you have a much better chance of transferring to a UC from a CCC than you would getting accepted as a freshman with that same GPA in high school and your SAT scores will not be an issue as a transfer student. The UCs give strong preference to transfer applicants from CCCs.
