I want to go to a college in california, but I live in New York.
So that rules out all the UC schools.
I dont want it to be a religous school.
Any suggestions on schools?

Why do the UC Schools automatically rule out?

There are a lot of private schools in California. A few that come to mind immediatley are Stanford, Lima Linda, Pamona, Cal Tech, Claremont schools, University of Redlands, etc.

Yeah, you don't have to be a resident of California to get into a UC, it's just easier for residents to get in.

Pepperdine is a good school to...I take classes at UCR right now (its like 10 minutes form my house) but I would never think of going there. I like stanford and pepperdine.

^Pepperdine's religious.

What sort of school are you looking at? Anymore specifics?

Well, don't go to Pepperdine if you don't want a religious school. I also second hksangha's question...why are you ruling out the UCs?

The original poster would be an out-of-state applicant. For one thing, it's slightly more difficult to get accepted and for another, the OP would have to pay out-of-state fees (which are incredible.)

OK, For math/science Cal Tech and Harvey Mudd; For larger universities, Stanford and the University of Southern California (USC); for small lac's, Pomona (superb and very difficult in terms of admissions), Claremont McKenna, Pitzer, Scripps (women only) which are all part of the Claremont Colleges; Occidential (small lac); for the arts, CalArts in Valencia. I'm sure I'm leaving some out -- take a look at the Fiske book.

University of the Pacific---very Ivy League environ--small classes--good LAC

The UCs (to a lesser degree Cal and UCLA), unless there's a specific draw, just aren't the same bargain for out of state applicants that they are for in-state applicants.

The best are Pomona, CalTech, and Stanford. For LAC like enviroment, try Occidental.

is California State University: Long Beach hard to get into for out of staters?

I dont want a religious school, ill probally be majoring in one of these
A science
Language?,
Pre Med,

I really dont know.. I just want to be in california for college. =]

Why aren't you applying to the UC's. While it is more difficult to get accepted if you are out of state, it's not impossible.

CSU's are far less selective and will probably take you.

I'd explore private universities if I were you, you'd get a better financial aid package.

CSU's are far less selective and will probably take you.

I laughed

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The person may have financial difficulties- such as their parents are white middle class but won't pay for their college- not a dime- and they must get it all by themselves somehow... scholorships, part time job, etc. Much more difficult when the amount of money that must be paid to a school is astronomical.
Tymel, what are your stats like? Would you mind going to a liberal arts college? Are you looking for a city atmosphere?
Well im only a sophmore but my average so far is a 92.
Whats a liberal arts college? A city college would be cool thats why im probally going to apply to NYU, BU but I want to apply to some cali colleges also.
So this is my list of california schools.
Cal State Uni Long Beach
San Diego State Uni
San Fran State Uni
is that all?
It's good to learn about your options early, but if you're a sophomore--and less than halfway through it, at that--you really don't need to have a "list" of anything yet. Between sophomore and senior year, my opinion of schools did a total 180. Besides totally switching my "list," I changed my field of interest, the size of school I wanted, the climate, the type of community...basically everything you can possibly change your mind about. This isn't necessarily what will happen to everyone, but seriously...read up on things, don't worry about it much just yet. Give yourself a chance to enjoy high school for awhile or you'll go crazy!
NYU and BU are more or less totally incomparable to the Cal States in a lot of ways. USC, for one, seems like it would be a more logical place to look (not that there's anything right or wrong about any of the above). It's good that you're looking at all types of schools right now because so much about your future application is just unknown, but I would advise you to keep researching without worrying much at all about lists and intentions.
Good luck!
Thanks, I am not really concerned about list, Since I have like 100 colleges I want to go to. I just want to know since california is where I want to be.
