Call from RISD President John Maeda?

I was asleep this morning and on my machine there was a message from John Maeda saying the admission officers compiled a list of top talent and I was on it. He told me to visit our.risd.edu and more adcom officers would call me later.

What does this mean? Is it just marketing or am I actually special? I was thinking about applying to RISD last year, but I thought that my work wasn't good enough, so I didn't apply. The deadline is 2/15, so I still have time. I originally wanted to apply b/c of the Brown-RISD program (I have already applied to Brown, but didn't check the box for I am applying to Brown-RISD...) Plus I haven't started the 3 required drawings.

It's hard to know the answer to that, but I'll be interested to hear what people think it means. Did you go to National Portfolio Day where they evaluated your work? Did you visit the school and have a portfolio review? How might they have gotten your number? There's a possibility they gave you favorable reviews at a NPD, and that they'd like to see an app. In addition to this, they may be trying to jack up the number of apps submitted that I suspect may be greatly down this year due to financial concerns.

I didn't go to NPD.. I went to a RISD session in October? and showed one piece to a admission representative (not an officer)... but it didn't seem like he was that interested in it (he really liked some other people from my school). I filled out a postcard there, probably with my phone#..

If you want to go to the school, you could scramble and get an app ready. There's no telling what could happen with it though. They might have really been impressed with the one piece you showed them, or it might be marketing. You won't know for sure unless you apply though. Try posting this down in the visual arts forum too to see if anyone else received a call. If you're the only one, that might go to the argument that the call was sincere.
