Callbacks and on campus auditions

My D and I are trying to put together a plan and a budget for her BFA auditions next year. I keep hearing about some students who did prescreens, then got invited to Unifieds from their prescrens, but after Unifieds were asked to fly out to the campuses for callbacks. That is a lot of time and money we had hoped not to spend by going to Unifieds. Does anyone know which schools require on campus call backs after Unifieds??? Thanks!

They are usually schools that require prescreens for which the student did a walk in at Unifieds and had not submitted a prescreen prior. The walk-in constitutes an in person prescreen in that case.

The only one I know of who does that is Rutgers

U minn does a callback weekend for their guthrie program- but that is straight theater,(as is Rutgers I think, could be wrong) not MT - though you may be applying to both types of programs

All the ones I know of are straight theater too: Rutgers and Minnesota-Guthrie, as mentioned above; Juilliard (right?); and the UK schools.

Does USC?

Oklahoma’s Unified Audition serves as a pre-screen and you are called back to campus from that point.

@bromquest USC invites some top students to interview for their full tuition and half tuition scholarships. Each college has an “allotment” of scholarships to award, including the School of Dramatic Arts. Both BFA and BA applicants are in the running for the scholarships if they apply by Dec. 1. The interview weekend is required if you are invited and want to be considered for the scholarship. There are other scholarships available which are not dependent upon a campus visit, including a half tuition scholarship for National Merit Finalists. USC does not have a separate MT degree.

pursuethedream, UNIFIEDS is actually a great way to maximize time/ money. I wish my daughter had scheduled more of her auditions during her week in Chicago. My D did audition for schools that week that had put her through the pre-screen, but also a few more she had applied to and also a few walk-ins. FYI, the majority of schools are not actually there the entire week, most are only there the first three days. I think CMU and maybe one more school were still holding auditions by Thursday.

pursuethedream, my D has two classmates at University of Minnesota callbacks this weekend. They had to pay for flight, but everything else covered. They house them with students, transport from airport, pay for meals…

This is so helpful-thanks everyone-I heard Elon requires an on campus call back too…anyone know for sure?
Also-is there a list of schools that require prescreens anywhere?
Thank you all of you amazing parents-what a journey this is!

Elon only has on campus auditions and do not attend Unifieds. I don’t consider their on campus auditions to be a “callback.” It is the audition day for those offered an opportunity to audition after going through a prescreen process.

If I remember correctly, my daughter did pre-screens for Ithaca, Michigan, Indiana, Elon, and Penn State. It sounds like more schools will implement the pre-screen process next year.

Which schools are adding prescreens next year?

Indiana only does on-campus auditions. And, yes, Elon. Prescreens save many families a great deal on travel expenses.

I guess that would make BW’s on campus auditions a “callback” since they prescreen now- and I don’t think they go to unifieds either (though I think they do go to moo-nifieds)

It would be so helpful if there was a list of schools that did prescreens!
Thanks everyone!

The thing is that schools change their procedures all the time so the risk of such a list (or any list, she scolds herself) is that families might rely on outdated information. I don’t see how anyone could say with certainty today what the policies will be next September. Certainly a list of schools that did prescreens this year might be helpful but it would not necessarily provide good or complete information about next year.

Also, just to clarify, all or nearly all of the Unified auditions that the kid did were earned through the prescreen process and scheduled only after a prescreen “pass”. Schools requiring a visit to campus after both a prescreen and a Unified audition has gotta be a very short list.

Another that only auditions on campus is Texas State.

Here are some of the schools that used a prescreen this year:

Baldwin-Wallace
UCF
Coastal Carolina
Elon
FSU
Illinois Wesleyan
Indiana
Ithaca
Michigan
Nebraska Wesleyan
Oklahoma
Otterbein
Pace
Penn State
Shenandoah
TCU
Texas State
U Arts (optional)

Some schools require upload of materials (headshots, resumes, videos) but do not use them for prescreening: Viterbo, for example.
