called by a new name

how hard do you think it would be to get people at colllege.... when I go... to call me by my middle name instead of my first?... would it be too confusing?

anybody else thought of doing this, just for a nice change?

yeah, definitely! it's a cool idea. richard nixon's wife was named thelma but called herself pat/patricia. no different than a nickname, i'd think.

Lots of people do that when they start college. It's easy to do -- as long as you remember to answer to the new name. :)

People at "college" do not magically know your name. In fact, all they know is what you tell them your name is. So, pretend that you are meeting a new person and you tell them that your name is Xavier. They will call you Xavier.

i think im going to do it... what do i do on my college overnight?

I think going by your middle name is super-lame, unless you have a rockin' middle name. If you want to change your name, why not pick any name?

One guy I know shares the same first name with his father, so he is called by his middle name to avoid confusion.

because i like my middle name, and it has a special significance, i don't want to choose just any random name

Hm. I'd kind of like to go by a different nickname in college. Since my first name is Kathleen, I've got plenty of nickname options... but my parents/grandparents have always called me Kathie, so suddenly asking people to call me Kate or Katie might be confusing.

Well, now I've got something to think about.

Yeah, like I said, if it's special, go for it. But you can have ANY name. If your middle name happens to also be your first choice, bring it out.

it's not that hard. You just introduce yourself as 'middle name' and that's it.

I changed to a nickname when I went to HS, from a longer, unpronouncable name. It was pretty easy.

My middle name is rockin' (it's Matilda:P)

I think I'm going to do that, and then people can shorten it to "Mat."
I'll be the coolest college student ever.

most people mispronounce my name because I pronounce it the European way rather than the American way. But I think when I go to college I'll just stop correcting people and start going with the American pronounciation, but i'm not sure yet....

my name is ridiculously complicated but i hadnt found a proper nickname until recently. ill probably go with it for college.
but what about the people back home? like, theyll read my facebook and wonder who "nickname" is. is this even something to worry about? lol

^ I wouldn't worry about that

My brother goes by his middle name, because a name very similar to his first name was the most popular name for boys his age.

My cousin also goes by his middle name

I was actually considering that. Sure, I like my name... but it's way to common. Most of the times I hear my name in school, it's someone calling someone else. My middle name, my Korean name, is MUCH less common. I also don't think it's that bad or hard for people to say the first part of it.

haha I have the opposite reason for thinking about using my middle name.

My name is ridiculously uncommon. In fact, it hasn't been one of the top 1000 girl's names since like 1932 or something. And that year, it was like the 380th top name. Around that, anyway.

My middle name is so much more common. With that name, I could use almost any nickname. Like Ella! (I love that name)

I've been going by "Mike" for the past 10 years of my life, because my real name is too hard to say for most Americans. Maybe I should change it? Plus, Mike is basically the most common of all common names. I've got at least one other Mike in 3 of my classes.

But my first name is "Gongmyung" and people always shorten that to "Gong" and I dislike that nickname...
