Hey, I was deferred from my early decision school. I am planning on calling my admissions rep to see if i can find out any way of sending supplements to improve my chances. Here's sumtin along the lines i was planning to say:

Hello, Ms. .My name is (my name) . I applied to your school during the early decision round and was deferred. The question I have for you is if I could send any useful supplements to improve my chances of admission during the regular decision round. Since the decision, I have worked hard in continuing my extra-curricular activities, excelling in academic and sport competitions, and keeping my grades up. I have re-taken the SAT Reasoning Test and improved my score by 180 points. I have also gotten an extra recommendation from the superintendent of my school (If there is anything else I can send in (perhaps an extra essay, an audio tape of me playing my instrument), please let me know as I am willing to do anything to get into your school.

What do you guys think? Can you suggest any improvements? Should I cut some stuff out? Please if you have any advice let me know as it would be greatly appreciated.

If you're going to do it, you should do it now -- many schools have already begun the review and selection process for the deferred and RD applicants.

I would call sooner rather than later, if at all (late Dec/early Jan was probably the best time). Last year, I called after being deferred EA, but it didn't help very much.

If you do call, I would recommend having something pre-written since there is a good chance your call will go to voicemail. Don't make it sound too rehearsed, and keep it more direct/simple than what you have so far.

Call now and ask what it was that caused you to be deffered and ask if you can send anything in that would help. For example, if it was your essay ask if you can write an aadditional essay to be evaluated etc. or see if they want more teacher recs. Either way, write to the school and explain why it's your first choice and what you would gain/contribute by going there.

My name is and I applied for the class of 2010 through the early decision plan. I ended up being deferred and I was wondering if, by any chance, I would be able to find out if there are any areas of my application which upon I can imporve, and if I can send any supplemental materials that would help.

I think that sounds like a great way to start the conversation. Be sure to add that it is still your first choice and ask if you can also send in some supplemental materials related to the area you want to major in (for example, if you want to be an english major ask if you can send a short story you've written etc.) They will almost defienetly say no but it will show that you are genuinly interested and serious about going. One more thing, when you call, ask to speak with YOUR admissions officer not just the random person who answered the phone. Often times it's by city/state/region so if you don't know your admissions officer or can't find it on the website call and ask to speak with the admissions officer for _____ city etc. It's always better if you talk to the person who's incharge of your application because if you just talk to someone who answers they probably won't tell your admissions officer that so and so called who was deferred and is still really interested in the school. The whole point of calling is to show your interest to the one who decides if you get in (or at least has the power to influence the decision) so make sure to talk to the right person. Good luck!
