Calling ALL 2008, 2009 Cornell Applicants!!

I am having so much trouble with the supplement essay asking for your intellectual interests. People who have already applied to cornell, can you please tell us what you wrote about for the intellectual interest essay? It would be a huge help. THANKS SOOO MUCH!

PS: We wont take your ideas, because no 2 people have the same interests

umm just write about what interests you and why and how its kinda self explanatory isn't it?

hmm I dont get it though...

are they general interests like "i like math and english" or are they specific interests like "i like doing mensa problems" (i dont know its just an example lol)

If you could please just give some basic idea ideas i would reallllly appreciate it.

Pretend you are the application reader. Would either of your examples merit attention?

Intellectual interests go far beyond a subject category. They should reflect your involvement in something above and beyond regular schoolwork. What interests do you pursue out of passion? What were the last five books or items you checked out of the library?

You may be on the cusp of discovering your interests, but the fact that they are not fully formed shouldn't matter. Discuss an area you would like to pursue, and the reasons why.

My d sort of took the same route that midwestern suggested. Love of Reading--Read Silent Spring--appreciate nature and took interest in environmental issues--involved in Outdoors Club with HS and activities she was involved with because of club (beach clean up- field trip to watch meteor shower) etc. etc. I guess it was ok as she's going back tomorrow to begin soph year. Hope this info is helpful. I know they are now using Common App. Are they still requiring 5-6 essays??

Don't say you like English, say you like to read x type of literature, specifically x, y, and z authors because they make you think about x in a way that Q in your life never did.

Explain how reading X passage from X book made you question X and after realizing that you enjoyed this kind of intellectual stimulation, you have decided to pursue study in x, y, and z specific fields of literature. You have particular interest in taking X course w/professor KudosBar, etc, etc etc

I think you get the point.

Its not what you want to study in college and why? Its what you want to study at CORNELL AND HOW! :-) Stay motivated!

Should my reply be consistent to what college I am applying??

For example, If I am applying to Engineering, should I write my interests in math/science or engineering stuff????

Haha, yes!

If you're applying to engineering, I sincerely I hope its cause you like engineering and don't just wanna look super smart on an MBA application down the road.

If you're applying to engineering than your true interests shouldn't lie w/philosophy, english, etc - you should be writing about building things, creating things, etc
