Hello, my name is Kris, and I was just hoping to gain some insight on how the Aerospace Engineering programs were in UMD. Also, can you tell me how your experience as a student getting this degree was? Finally, is it challenging getting a job in the field, or does Maryland help a lot with that?
Thank you all in Advance!!
If he’s still checking in on this forum, @da6onet would be a good person to answer this more specifically since that is his major.
As a mom of a MechE (which is a close cousin to Aero), my son is very happy with his decision to attend Maryland. He took advantage of a lot of unique programs and has a minor in Technology Entrepreneurship. Overall, he’s enjoyed his experience, but I’m not sure what you are looking for in that question. Are you looking for challenging classes? Interesting and rewarding research opportunities? (yes to both, btw) What specifically are you asking?
Maryland has a career service center specific to engineering and a lot of career fairs that help you find an internship and a job. There are 2 main ones offered by the university itself, one in fall and one in spring. Then the engineering has several additional career fairs; in the fall there is the annual engineering picnic which gives you an opportunity to meet with some companies that are looking specifically for engineers as well as learn about all the clubs, organizations and opportunities that engineering has to offer at Maryland. Each department also hosts a career fair specific to that discipline and finally, there is a career fair just for start-up companies that has some interesting opportunities. I know someone whose son is a sophomore in the departmental honors Aerospace program at Maryland and he got an internship as a freshman. Of course, there are no guarantees anywhere as a lot depends on your own effort and how you present yourself. The career center offers classes to help with prepping your resume, mock interviews, etc.
