Calling all fellow Accel. Med Applicants!

This information is simply not true. Since 5 out of the 10 spots at rice/baylor are reserved for TX residents this program by far is the hardest to get into just because of the lack of available spots. HPME accepts close to 50 people which is really quite a lot even if there are 1000+ applicants this is the same situation at Brown. Since Case accepts only around 20 its acceptance rate is much lower than both Brown and Rice. But in addition PSU/Jefferson (20 matriculants), UPitt (around 15), Washington University Scholars Program (10), UC San Diego (10), are all programs that are probably more difficult to get into than HPME.

Hey -

where did you get that stat about rice/baylor? I'm like 99% sure that no spots are reserved for anyone. Also, there are generally 17-20 spots to make a class of about 15.

I'd be interested to hear your source, since I'm pretty sure that it's your information that is "simply not true"

i think i've asked this question in the past, but i did not get a response......

what does the typical ba/md REJECTED applicant's stats look like? i.e. those who don't get interviews and then those who aren't offered acceptance?

also, i was just thinking about rice/baylor kids that are at rice now...out of the seven that I know (across all of the classes) three are from texas, with the others coming from NY, FL, MI, and ID. But this is actually a smaller percentage than the number of texans in the student body at rice. Although this is a small sample, it suggests that there isn't really the quota that bharath described.

haha watever it'll still be competitive as anything to get into that program (is why i know i don't have a chance and therefore am NOT applying!). lol.

ok..i want to apply to some bs/md programs, but i dont know if i will make it. my SAT is way lower than everyones here..

SAT:1370
weighted gpa will be 3.91
EC's:500+ hours of volunteering at hospital, 30 of which include ER
volunteered at annual science expo every year
then a bunch of random clubs and stuff

all my SAT II's will be over 700: Math IIC, Chemistry, Biology, Writing

what are my chances at: (remember, these are all direct medical programs)

VCU
University of Connecticut
UMDNJ
GW
BU
drexyl
temple
cincinatti
northeastern ohio universities
NYU
Lehigh
Penn State
East Virginia Medical school
University of Wisconsin
USC
University of Miami

papcutta - it's cool if you don't want to apply here, but your stats are definitely well into the ballpark range. Doesn't it make more sense to apply and let them tell you whether or not you are good enough, rather than just you eliminating yourself? It would be a real shame if you didn't apply solely because you didn't think you could get in. However, if there are other reasons why your wouldn't want to go here, then by all means, don't apply.

hey I was alarmed when I read one of the previous posts: is the PSU/Jefferson Program really MORE competitive than Rice/Baylor? I was basically planning to not apply to the Rice/Baylor program, because I've heard that its really competitive and my stats aren't that excellent, but now I'm having second thoughts...

jenskate
While there is probably not an instate requirement stated explicitly, I am inclined to belive that Rice/Baylor chooses to enroll a number of instate students some from h.s like Debakey which almost nurtures students for entrance, also BCM has many other programs with other texan undergraduate universities that are only open to texas residents. However that isn't to say that an out of state student necessarily has a decreased chance of acceptance, but I think all things being equal a texas resident would be given admission as they are more likely to matriculate.

debakey has a separate program with baylor, i think. Like you said, baylor does have a variety of programs for specific groups (URMs, TX residents, etc.) R/B isn't one of these programs. But, like papucutta said... regardless of whether or not there are quotas, the competition is stiff.

hey everyone, here are my stats
although my gpa isn't as high as most, i think my ec's are unique and show dedication....well i dunno, plz tell me wut u think....

SAT: 710 - V 800 - M (1510)

ECs:

Tae Kwon Do:
13 years... competitive
now assisant instructor with work twice a week
3rd dan black belt

Crew: varsity for 3 years (fall and spring seasons)
Volunteer at local hospital, genetics department, minor lab work - 3 summers
Habitat for Humanity Volunteer
NYLF-medicine
National Merit semifinalist
Natl Society of HS scholars
over my four years of high school i have shadowed various doctors at the hospitals in which i volunteer, learning basic clinical procedures and doing minor work, rec. letters can be written....if necessary (most schools only like 3, all from school??right?)

i come from a very comp. HS (#1 in state) which does not rank, i would mostl likely be top 10% though

im lookin at several programs, including psu, miami, rice/baylor, boston u....
what do you think my chances are?

Neelish some of these programs such as Boston University's are probably a reach. University of Wisconsin's program is only avaible to students from the state, and NYU does not ahve a program anymore so you may want to think about alternitives. However, a white girl from my school was admitted into Northwestern's HPME with a 1380 a SAT II average of 4.2 and was not in top 10% of grade, so anything is possible!

does anyone know what it takes to get invited for an interview? What minimum criteria is needed? such as SATs, GPA, essay, overall value?i understand that many programs may have a min. sat and gpa to apply, such as 1400 and 3.5, but realistically, to get an interview, what does it take...

i'd say 1500+ (1450 would be stretching it, i think), 3.8-4.0 unweighted gpa, def. above 4.0 weighted gpa....i.e. for the top programs....of course, as buckwald said there are exceptions.....

1500+ and 3.8-4.0 unweighted??!!
Thats not taking into account other triats of the student or the competitiveness of the schools.. right?
How does a 1500 and 3.5/4 stand at universities like GW, Rutgers, and Rice?
I realize my GPA is quite low, but its actually due to some computer errors that some teachers wont fix. Like a 75 in art when my grade was a 91...
anyway, is the 3.5/4 fine, coming from a very competitive school? doesn't rank or weight

thanks

well i know that certain progs have cutoffs for sat's......but if you look at the average sat scores/gpa for the applicants that get accepted, you get the only qualified idea of what you "need." from what i've seeeeen, the most competitive ppl at the top progs (haha i hope to slip by somehow) have those kind of stats and then killer ec's, like those that bharath posted (that was an amazing post, btw). i dunno, but then again, numbers only get you so far; although i've talked to student in a good program about the whole deal with numbers, and he classified the 1600, 4.0 ppl as "divine" at the interview stage of the process........haha...yiikes....

rubens: i can't understand why a teacher wouldn't change a !C! to an !A!......there's a big difference that it could make on ur gpa, i would think.....and the way you wrote it made it seem like this happened on multiple occasions.....that sounds too ridiculous to be true.....couldn't something like that put SOMEONE's job in jeopardy at ur school? btw, i have a 1500 3.8unweighted 4.2weighted, and i've let go of any hopes for getting into rice--no matter what jenskate tells me lol. i don't know enough about rutgers, but i'm also applying to gw--i don't think the 3.5 would be as much of a problem there, seeing as how gw is a "second-tier program," if such a thing exists...lol..

thanks papucutta..
and about the grades.. some were from the 8th grade.. honors classes that counted towards my transcript.. and brought down my gpa..
and concerning the teachers in H.S. since I kinda didn't notice the errors until the past year, and I had these classes in my freshman year - two years earlier, they say "oh I don't remember you as being a 90+ student.." when they probably don't remember me at all..
Guess I should have kept my report card when I got em..
thanks and gluck with your apps man..

lol papucutta, i know what you mean. i looked at kiwi's stats with dropped jaws, (btw this is anxiousant1, felt my malu self needed a new name)
well guys look on a trampled, yet resilient applicant
sati = 1450
satii = math iic- nov6
writing- 720 (eek..)
chem - nov 6

loads of science research stuff, wrote science papers, got honorable mention in a local science fair, went to intel and the long island version of intel and westinghouse (i didnt place so i dont know if this counts)
into aps and alls..the usual 4.0 gpa, 5/390, mm what else..
btw, im guilty of being a lurker (hehe im ccing instead of writing apps..) :)

oh yeah. how is everyone's app process going? that's surprising to hear that "white girl" went to NU's HPME...
this is where i'm applying Northwestern, Brown, BU, Rochester (how is REMS-does anyone know??), and CaseWestern
good luck to all n hi to all the kids i knew from the ghetto cc..we're modern now eh?

haha the ghetto cc--umbidy funny eclipsed. btw, rems is awesome....great med school too......my hometown--holla....but also, it's extremely difficult to get into....haha...eclipsed, that's quite an ambitious application list--lol, don't tell me that one of those is a "safety" for you....haha oh God.....lol about the sat ii writing--i got the same CRUMMMMMMMY score.....we'll see what happens i guess. anyways, deadlines have not rolled around yet, so keep posting! lol.
