Calling all math high scorers (740+)

800
I used "10 realistic math 2c tests"
the thing was tough as hell. But I did all 10 tests...and I don't regret it one bit ;)

800 as freshman on both SAT I and Math IIC
This really helps: get a TI-89 so that you can check many of your answers quickly.
Don't hesitate to write out all the numbers when they ask "how many numbers fit this description?". It's messier, but often much faster than trying to figure it out with logic.
While study books are great, it's better to build a solid foundation, ESPECIALLY in algebra. Also try to build up your critical/creative thinking skills with puzzles and riddles.
good luck :)

I have a 89, useless on SAT math (the reasoning test)

I get the hard questions no problem, but I always mess up the easier ones.

same situation, do it again
i got 680, 690 and then 800.
advice:
1. study for a week
2. stop studying for a week
3. do tests for a week
4. study a week
5. relax for a week
before your test, don't take any test a week b4 the test!
when i cramed, i only got 10 points higher, when i chilled, i got 800 :)

750M, 790IIC

for the sat i's, practice! for the iic, use the barron's book!

not sure I agree:
I started at a slow pace 2 weeks before, crammed like mad 4 days before stopped everything friday night...and it worked

The first time I took it, I got a 730 and I was WTFOMGAH??!! because I thought I would get an 800. For my second time, I practiced A LOT and carefully inspected my errors. You have to prepare yourself emotionally (lol) too because a BIG part of the math section is concentration. I got an 800 the second time.

I have a question.. Is it fairgame to have programs or formulas on a graphing calculator? For example radical simplifcation program or etc.

I don't want to get screwed for saving a few seconds but if it's allowed then that'll make me a little more at ease. They don't say one way or another

you can store anything you please in your calculator...theoretically, the test is designed so that it doesn't give you enough of an edge to be worth doing...though if someone were really desperate, I suppose they could type out an entire SAT Prep book onto their calculator and use it as reference
but if you do that, you should stop and think:
(1) am I going to spend more time looking up and reading material during the test than actually working on the test?
(2) do I feel like this is an immoral act? (NEVER act against your moral code; if you do, then it'll be really hard to get that code back)
(3) if I get a disproportionate score, will it hurt me in the long run? (will I be placed into classes that I can't handle?)

I always wondered whether it would be possible to put a dictionary on a calculator (don't worry, I didn't even try, and I'm NOT suggesting that you do so, since that is definitely unethical and will get you booted for sure)

anyway, if you're gonna store radical simplification programs, you should just invest in a TI-89 ($150) as I said earlier, since it has a built-in computer algebra system

again, formulas do not help half as much as a good foundation in algebra...drill algebra into your head, know it forwards and backwards, learn as many proofs as you can, etc.

i agree with the post above; try using the barrons prep book. It's a bit harder than the real test but it certainly helped me. The Princeton Review one is excellent as well.

this is kind of a weird suggestion but pray that you get 3 math sections. That way you know that every single problem will count thus (hopefully) sharpening your attention.

i got a 76 on my psat math

Don't rush, keep a clear head, and practice out of 10 Reals. That is really all I did.

all the problems have an answer, its how you get to it determines your score, their is the esay way which i s done mre frequet on the easy problems and a hardd way which is done more frequet on the hard problems, so when you look at the hard problems, first read the question and then try to remove atleast two answers w/o doing any math, just from what you read, then perform math function and get answer, remeber on most sats you can skip one, maybe two and still get a high score so dont be scared to skip if you have no idea where to begin, if it takes yoiu more than 30 secs to remove answers, automatically skip it and only come back after you have checked for mistakes on other problems, also memorize the forumlas in the math sections so you wont have to flip back and forth for the formulas, time is an essance on the test and it doesnt need to be wasted b/c you forgot forumlas you learned in 7/8 grade

concentrate and be careful. don't let the stress get to you.

700 first time, 790 second time

Eat food during the break so you don't get hungry during the last section section and get four wrong out of ten like I did the first time.

Also, I read the question wrong sometimes, so I underlined important info in the question text the second time.

i got an 800 on math and 800 on math iic...

i gotta say, those books really don't help, they just present whatever u already know... honestly, answer all the questions, don't be hesitant because ur unsure... and also... just read over the questions 2 times before answering, it's all good

Hey, question for all high scorers:

I rarely have time left over, maybe 5 minutes, and when I try to go faster I make more mistakes..

Is there anyone here who did not have 9, 10 + minutes left over and got a high math score?

If not, how did you increase your speed?

Thanks

I usually finish just in time, but with no mistakes usually (usually 0-1 mistakes)

..and well rested.

First time i took sat and math2c i had finished finals and ap tests respectively. I didn't think i did that well on either so my confidence was a little down and i ended up geting 700 on math and 740 math 2c (i even didn't get to 6 questions)

Next time i was well rested and pretty confident i would do better and got 790 on both

i finished with about 15 mins to go... the kicker was that i actually had the flu while taking it... about increasing speed... sometimes there are really simple problems that u should do in ur head vs. writing them down, it's just a waste of time really
