Hi, so maybe I missed it, but I haven’t seen any threads for prospective math majors, stats majors, actuarial, applied math majors, computational math majors, etc etc etc.
I’d love to hear some tips from current UCLA students about their experiences, especially. However, I also want to get to know my fellow transfer applicants and the freshman applicants. I’m a statistics major personally so if anyone did that, please talk to me!
Does anyone know how much programming you learn as part of these majors?
Bump because I want to know too? I’m prospective student, applied to math/econ
Hey, I’m a second year pure math major at UCLA, and I guess I could answer some of your questions. As for my academic experience thus far, I’ve been very pleased with the quality of education. Concerning programing, it really depends on you. As a stats major, I think you’ll have to learn R and Matlab at least, but you can/should take a lot of CS classes. I have classmates in math who do a lot of programming, and others who do very little (such as myself). You can specialize in CS, or minor in math as well. I would also recommend taking some math equivalent classes of stats classes, as they are often more rigorous (such as Math 170A vs. Stats 100). You might also consider taking the honors courses if you’re interested in graduate school, as they offer a more personal/rigorous experience. Let me know if you have any other questions, and good luck on your admissions!
Thanks @sgtweed! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Generally my plan is to try to stick to the easiest possible stuff so I can hopefully PASS (if I even get in…) but if I need additional resources or help it’s really good to know that the pure math dept. has classes that pertain. Thanks for the info on computer science too!
