Calling all Phillips Exeter students......help!

I'm thinking of applying to 10th or 11th grade at Phillips Exeter. Right now I am in 8th grade. I was looking on the "Chances for Phillips Exeter" and I saw that someone with great qualifications got wait listed. I was wondering what might help me stand out to the admissions board so they think about accepting me. If anyone goes to Phillips Exeter can you tell me some of your qualifications so i have clue in what they are looking for. What are some qualities they like to look for. I am applying for financial aid so I really need help standing out as a better candidate.

So far I have......
1 year in a leadership program for girls. you get recommended for this by teachers. in this i led a speech and fundraiser/awareness raiser for the Uganda conflict and Invisible Children.
4 years of violin.
Volleyball-1 year
Track-1 year
All As
Proficiency in writing.
Most likely great recommendations
I speak fluent bangla
I take french and spanish
I am going to be on the high school newspaper.
Probably a good interview. I make good impressions.
I can read Arabic
All honors and seminar (the highest level classes for a certain subject) classes.

So far I need.....

SSAT scores. I am studying for them. I hopefully will do well.(any suggestions for good books to study from.?)
More extracurriculars(anyone have any suggestions?)
Good essay ( any tips for writing a good essay?)

If anyone can suggest ideas to "beef up" my resume for Phillips Exeter that would be great. ( I know i still have a long time to go before i apply but i would like to prepare before hand)

the chances forum this belongs in…

Rad, are you by any chance watching the Star Wars marathon currently on TV?

SSRS
SSRS!!!

omg… ** THERE’S A STAR WARS MARATHON ON!!! WHAT CHANNEL??? **         :D

I think you might of misread my question. I didn’t ask what my chances were. I wanted to know what the admissions people look for and what I could do to help me get into Phillips Exeter.

well you seem pretty good. they want well rounded people. but not cookie cutter applicants- you know what i’m talking about- straight A+ average, 3 instruments, 2 sports at travel level, National Awards, 4i73573603 hours of community service… they want things YOU like and are good at

Spike (whatever channel that is)

thanks! :)

Thanks. Thats what I was thinking. I’m planning on getting very involved with my leadership and help future club members out and also get more involved in the charity i was talking about because i really enjoyed that.

In my opinion, dont start stuff now to help your application, use what you already have. Dont start charity right now just bevause of your application, start doing charity if you really believe it. Trust me, schools will know the difference. I think if you do well on your ssat and get decent recs you should be fine

I can read arabic too!! haha  I got waitlisted, though… Are you a minority? I mean, when it comes to racial/ethnic groups? Because if you are, I’d say you’re exactly what they’re looking for. But then again, I don’t know much more about this whole prep school thingy anymore than you do :/

in my opinion, race doesnt play that big of a play into admission. for instance, maybe MAYBE if it was a over represented cadidate had the same stats as under represented candidate, the under represendted canddiate can be chosen. My race (Asian- Korean- haha makes it worse) is definately over represented in boarding schools, however I didnt exactly have a 4.0, in fact my gpa turned out to be 3.67. just do what your best at and im sure ull do fine

idk, what jyun’s saying definately does make sense, but honestly, if I was asian or white or something instead of what I actually am, with my stats, I wouldn’t be surprised if I got rejected instead of waitlisted. Then again, maybe I’m looking at the wrong things. lol. I really connected with my interviewer and showed that I was spunky/outgoing/serious about exeter and that’s why they waitlisted me?

You have to be yourself. Don’t try to mold yourself into what you think the school wants. There is a certain amount of randomness in the process so even if you are the “ideal Exonian,” you still might not get in. Be real.

Why are you planning on waiting two or three years to apply?

I was planning to apply for 10 grade because I missed the 9th grade application. As for the “trying to do charity work for exeter” i wasnt planning on doing that only for exeter. I am actually very involved in my leadership group because I like it and I gave the speech about the charity because I saw a film about it and I wanted more people to pay attention to it. I know that exeter doesn’t want a 1,000 of the same students. And for the minority question I guess I am a minority. I from Bangladesh but most people include that with India. Indian people aren’t really a minority anymore. I don’t think being a minority helps you get accepted though.

I can read and write arabic too… and I can understand bangla although I am not fluent in it. I can also read write and speak urdu, speak and understand hnidi and I take spanish;) glad to see a multilingual person!:)your recs look pretty good , but honestly I dont really see anything that stands out that much…

I read and write arabic, understand/speak/read urdu, and can understand hindi. You win peddie. haha :)

I can speak fluent french, english, german, italian and I am taking latin next year but I think you win peddie beacuse well your languages are way cooler than mine but I used to live in bangladesh …

I can understand hindi and urdu too. urdu is easier for me to understand and speak though. i already mentioned this but im taking spanish and french.
yea, none of my recs are that interesting. i guess girls leadership is a little better than sports and instruments. its a program that isnt everywhere. i dont want to do the same recs that everyone else does because they bore me. i wouldnt do the whole cookie cutter student thing.
