Calling All Writing Geniuses!! X>700!!!

Okay, I got 650 on writing, and that's not too bad. But I want to get 800! So, in order to get that score, I really need to learn from my mistakes. I am taking all these practice tests, and I don't know why I missed them. So ALL YOU WRITING GENIUSES, please help me out and explain to me as I post the first problem!

1.) Medusa was so hideous that what people, if any, there were in her vicinity who looked at her turned to stone.

A) what people, fi any, there were
B) any people
C) the people, if there might be any
D) the people, fi any are
E) whatever people may be that were

(P.S: the answer is "B"!!! I thought "any people" didn't make sense!

2.) In the predawn crispness of a September morning, the conjunction of Mars and Venus thrilled the amateur astronomer like on the first occasion he had seen it.

A) like on the first occasion he had seen it
B) like it did the first tim eof his seeing it
C) as when he was thrilled the first time
D) like the thrill when first he saw it
E) as it had the first time he saw it

(P.S: I know the answer, but I want you to figure out and tell me the answer and explain to me how you got that. Thanks!)

^^ i think it's E.
parallel structure:
in the ... morning ... the conjunction ... thrilled // as it had the first time.

For
1.) Medusa was so hideous that what people, if any, there were in her vicinity who looked at her turned to stone.

would not "anybody" work?

Medusa was so hideous that anybody in her vicinity who looked at her turned to stone.

why would not "any people" in place of "anybody" work?

hey, if my explanations are right, i am getting into the exclusive Writing Geniuses's club!
all's left for me is to get x>700 :D

i guess there's not that many writing geniuses around here!

Where did #1 come from? Doesn't look like a very reliable source unless I'm sorely mistaken..
And I really think #2 is E, although it's not a very good answer.

1 is definitely B.

Medusa was so hideous that any people in her vicinity who looked at her turned to stone. It makes perfect sense. Anybody, any people, they both work.

2 is E.

It may be a small hunch, but it seems to me these aren't official SAT (blue book) questions, right?

2 is E... and I get 80 on MC by going by what "sounds right"

LOL... you need my 8th grade English teacher. It is because of him that I survived the verbal sections (CR and WR) of the SAT :)

I think 2 is A. It makes sense to me.

Only B makes sense it number 1.

Number 2 is E. Thanks guys. Lol sounds right? Better explanation than that please?

thats the way i do it, i just do what sounds right, im getting really close to 70 on the MC, thats because ive only done two practices. I know by the ear isnt the correct way, but for the sat, is there actually a correct way. If i get a 2400 who gives a crap, i have a friggin 2400

GPAx213: 2 probably isn't A, because A is too long and confusing. It doesn't thrill someone like on the first time he saw it; it thrills someone like it had the first time he saw it. Because you're comparing how the thrill felt to how it felt a long time ago. You're not comparing a thrill to "on the first occasion."

i thought 1 was D, 2 is def E.

sushant: For 1, how is D better than B? "people, if any" can be shortened into "any people," which is shorter and sounds better.

lol you are right

3.) When the students take a trip on the intracoastal waterway system next month, they will learn facts with which they have heretofore been unacquainted.

A) facts with which they have heretofore been unacquainted
B) facts with which they haven't been acquainted with
C) facts, being, heretofore, unacquainted with them
D) facts with which they haven't never been acquainted
E) facts, being unacquainted with them heretofore beforehand

(P.S: I know the answer. You tell me which one is the right answer and please explain it to me how you got that. Better than just "sounds right". Lol)

***? i'm guessing B , but without the "with" at the end... whys there two withs?

yeah I'm confused...B would be good if it wasn't for the two "with"s...I don't know but it could be A ?

I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HERE IN CC THAT GOT 800 ON WRITING! AND THEY WONT HELP ME! I know the answer guys, and looks like you guys fell into that same trap that I fell in

peteyflow, are those questions from CB or other test prep company?

If it's others, then don't bother answering it.
