Usually not, unless attendance is mandatory (e.g. in seminars or labs) and even then some professors use sign-in sheets.

A few professors call attendance in the first few classes of the semester just to learn everyone's names.

not in any of my classes. you're just expected to show up and if you don't it's your loss. In my Chem class the prof is required by the department to pass around a "sign-in" sheet saying you're in class.

the only class i have with attendance being called is my chemistry recitation class, which is pretty small....in all the other classes it's either a lecture where nobody cares or a medium sized class where the professor can just tell if you're not there by looking.

I've had a teacher that passed around a sign in sheet and another who calls role (great teacher and actually knows people by name)

I think it would depend on the size of the class/subject. In my department (dance) teachers call attendance each class, we have a very strict attendance policy. Even in my gen eds all teachers call attendance, but the policy is a little more lax. My school has really small classes though, my gen eds even only have about 20.

My philosophy class is small enough that if you're gone, the professor will notice, but he doesn't take official attendance. My other three classes are big lectures, and attendance isn't taken but extra credit is only given to those who attend--particularly those who attend on days with crappy weather, or on Fridays. Usually the prof will ask a super easy question like "Who did the basketball team play last night?" and even if you don't know the answer, you'll get credit because they'll tell you the answer. Technically you COULD give your buddy credit for being there but only if you know their Student ID Number, Full Name, and Phone Number. Not to mention...why give credit to the slackers? If they wanted to be there, they would be.

Son was in a class Fall Semester that had 200+ students. While prof did not call roll, according to son, they were assigned seats and TA's sat at front of class checking your seat. They did not care if you were asleep, taking notes, etc., as long as you were in your seat and on time!

my professors usually take attendance until they get to know names and then they can just tell and track who's there without calling.

Have some (in small classes) who take attendance every day, by either checking their own sheet (after they know everyone's names) or passing around a sing-in sheet. Some don't take attendance but do expect you to be there and can tell when you aren't. My professors in large classes either took attendance by having a sign in sheet on the wall, having assigned seats that the TAs checked, or not caring about attendance at all.

In my larger classes, there are no roll calls, but the TAs do keep an eye out to see who is generally attending lecture. Same thing with medium sized classes, except there aren't any TAs, so the professor doesn't really know who's attending... just if people are attending. In small classes/recitations, the TA/professor usually has a sheet that they take attendance on, but once they know our names, there's no actual calling. And even then, some don't take attendance anyway, because really, it's not hurting THEM if we don't attend.

Here they do in some classes, but that's because we have <25 kids/class.

My daughter's school uses clickers in some classes. I think it is mainly to gauge their participation but it also showed attendance.

yes. in language classes, and section.

I've had some professors that pass sign-in sheets around the room every time the class meets. Other than that, I think the only time that roll has actually been called out loud is the first day of class.

They don't call attendance once they've learned your faces (not necessarily names). But sometimes during the semester if they feel like it, they'll pass around a sign-in sheet. Just beware of any classes below 25 students. Then you're drawing attention to yourself if you skip that class.

In one of my marketing electives, my professor does. It's really annoying because it's a 7:00PM-9:30PM class. :-/

attendance is part of my grade for 3 of my classes this semester ugh
