My son would like to ultimately go into medicine. would it hurt his chances to get accepted into med svhool after getting his undergraduate degree from SLO? We would love to save some money giving the prospect of med school. any advise?

The only thing that will hurt his chance for med school is if he performed badly at Cal Poly. If he excel at Cal Poly, he will be very competitive for med school.

I had a SLO classmate (physics) that got accepted into UPenn med.

^^^Agreed. My son says that a lot of biomedical engineering students he knows are preparing for med school. I think that a major like this will certainly distinguish you from the run of the mill biology major.

Ultimately, it comes down to MCAT scores, grades in undergrad and having a compelling story. Going to Cal Poly will not hurt your son’s chances to get into med school one iota.

Cal Poly does have a program for preparing for medical school. There are a list of different papers that describe medical occupations at the school which tell you which classes you should take at Cal Poly to fulfill the prerequisites. There is also a student health advisor here everyday. He or she assists you if you have a question about premed/medical school. There is also a Cal Poly 1 unit class called SCM 101 Introduction to Health Professions that can get filled up quickly. You get to learn about the different health professions that are available to you and learn more about them.

Thank you QuestionO. That’s helpful. I am not sure he wants to do bio- engineering…he doesn’t like math that much, Osakadad. He probably would do runof the mill bio,but I will suggest it. Heis concerned not getting real high GPA if he did engineering, which he would need for med school. how difficult would it Beth double major in something unrelated to bio and still finish in 4 years? I looked at the flow chart, andtheredoes not seem to be much room. Also, since CALPOLY is so structured, how difficult would it be to study abroad for a pre-med student? mostlikelyjust asummer program?

I’ve also heard of people who did biomedical engineering and applied for med school. They decided that a biomedical engineering job would be a back up incase they didn’t get in. I would think it would be difficult to double major especially since it may be hard to get the classes he wants and it may end up taking another year and a half or two depending on the major. What major is he interested in? Cal poly does have a study abroad office too that your son can go to especially over the summer. If he speaks with the people at the study abroad office he may be able to study abroad and get units for his classes. He will still be able to be on track for med school. I’ve heard of students who are interested in medical school (from clubs) and ended up going to countries like Peru over the summer to help out.
