CalPoly SLO for Out of State

I’m from South Carolina, so I couldn’t go home most weekends.

What is the weekend life like at CalPoly? I know two schools, where I have been accepted, where the weekend life absolutely sucks and that’s a big turn off for me.

Are the OOS kids close at CalPoly SLO?

What is the best dorm, because I would have to chill there on the weekend unless I went home with someone.

Please tell your connection to CalPoly

Thanks :)

Because Cal Poly is a residential campus, most students don’t go home over the weekend unless it is a long weekend, or during quarter break/official holiday.

So SLO town and the campus itself are not dead on the weekend. You will see many students hanging out, doing outdoor activities like hiking, biking, running, studying for their dear life, or getting involved in club activities on and off campus. Or they go to the 2 beautiful beaches near by to just sit by the Pacific or surf.

Lots of students go to movies, restaurants, bars and clubs at night on the weekend in downtown SLO, so you will see many people waiting in line to get into bar/clubs.

Other than during the long breaks, there is something going on somewhere within campus or SLO. But during long breaks, the town/school is dead.

A couple of my daughter’s good friends in her dorm are from out of state. They definitely don’t go home. Like the previous poster said, there is usually always something to do, either on or off campus. My daughter’s weekend has started on Thursdays ever since she began school. No Friday classes! When the weather is nice, you’ll love going 15 minutes away to the beach (if you like the ocean atmosphere, that is.

My daughter is also an OOS student (from WA). One of her roommates is from Boston and the other two are from CA (they are in Cerro Vista). I agree with both the 2Leashes and fermium, most kids seem to stay at campus/SLO on weekends. I have never heard any complaints about a lack of things to do.

Most people stay on campus over the weekends, unless it’s a long weekend, then more people go home, but there are still quite a few people who stay on campus. Just know that it is expensive to fly out of slo. It is cheaper to fly out of a larger airport like LA, but you need some way to get there from slo of course. Best dorm: doesn’t really matter, but I’d say probably sierra madre or yosemite.

My son is set to graduate this June. We live less than 3 hours drive away and he has a car. Must be lots of things to do there as he only comes home to visit about once a quarter, and that’s when Mom threatens to visit him if he doesn’t visit us (and it has been that way since he started at Cal Poly).

Thank y’all so much. This has helped me out a lot :). I am going to hear back from Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech next friday, so I will have a good idea. Thanks again for all of your insight. I will continue to check, so people please continue to post.

NTKS17: I have been checking on tickets, they are expensive because gas is $4 per gallon, but I am looking at flying into LAX or SFO. Maybe San Jose, I haven’t flown into that airport before, but we will probably rent a convertible and take a drive up the Coast Highway :).

It sounds like a lot is going on in SLO :).

San Jose airport is probably closer than LAX.

If you want to see some incredible scenery, fly into SFO or SJO and drive down Hwy 1. It’s a slow and winding road, but it’s spectacularly pretty.

Plane ticket costs for flying in and out of slo don’t really change much, so even if gas prices drop it’s still usually somewhere around $550 or so for a round trip. Depending on where you’re flying to it might be slightly less or more.

My local airport is rated one of the most expensive in the country lol, but it was like $700 to fly from my local airport to SLO (ALOT OF $$$). I can take a Delta from ATL to LAX for nothing then my mom can rent a car. I will have to figure out some other mode of transport for the second leg, if I were to attend. Thanks for your post, NTKS17.
