I would agree with your parents for most majors, but for engineering Cal Poly is the equal of any UC below Cal and LA. Plus it's a much more fun school in a much better location, IMO, than both Davis and Irvine. I'd head straight to SLO!

I think any of the 3 would provide a great CS education and provide a lot of opportunities. I think you'll have a difficult time trying to decide based purely on the CS education capabilities of the schools since they're all good.

I think you should look at other factors - like which location you prefer to spend the next 4-5 years.

I think Cal Poly is comparable to UCSB, UCI, and UC Davis for engineering. Take into account where you want to study before making your decision. Another thing I'd suggest is that if you have plans on going into a PhD program then I'd take the UC's, but if you want to go straight into industry from undergrad Cal Poly is a solid choice due to its connection with employers.

IMO, Cal Poly's engineering reputation only extends to the EE and MechE, I have not heard of their Computer Science program outside of their web page.

I am a UC Davis grad and my brother-in-law and several friends went to SLO, and having grown up in Fresno I have spent a lot of time around SLO, Morrow Bay, and Pismo, and I love that area. However, I also liked cow town Davis too, and it's only a short drive to Berkely and SF bay area or Sacramento or Tahoe. Davis is a comfortable little town with a large Asian student body, at least more than SLO. I enjoyed Davis and would also enjoy SLO... I loathe Orange Country.

Anyway, chose based on your preferences for the location as I think all would be equal with the UCs being slightly more worthy.

I believe UC Davis is the best choice for you because most prof. in Cal Poly graduated from UC Davis. Cal Poly is one of the best colleges for CS BUT people are misunderstanding the potential of UCD at the same time. Definitely, UC SB,SC,Irvine,Merced are no match with UC Davis and Cal Poly.

Don’t go into what Cal Poly says “We are more hands-on”, UCD is just as practical. And employers would prefer to have someone from UCD over Cal Poly especially because of the location. But if you graduate from Cal Poly- does not mean you will be underestimated and you might just get the same job.

On the other side, please do not think UC Davis is much better then Cal Poly- they are equally the same but it all depends on your financial, location, student life and most of all how YOU use those four years.

If you’re not planning on going to grad school, I don’t think it matters where you go. Just go to the one that is most convenient for you. They’re all reputable schools for finding jobs. If you are planning on a masters/doctorate, the UCs would be a better choice.

All three schools are good for Computer Science and there’s nothing wrong going to either. It just depends on you. I think the biggest thing is to continue doing your research on all three schools, and if possible, try visiting them. I go to UC Irvine so if you want my perspective about it, PM me. I’m an engineer too and I kind of know the ins and outs of the engineering/computer science department. You definitely can’t go wrong with any of those schools.

Cal Poly has a bigger engineering program than either of those. All else being equal, that means Cal Poly will have a better reputation. You’ve already said that Cal Poly is equal to UCD, so I expect you’ll just agree with me.

Is that just an opinion or do you think their is a strong evidence that people with BS from Cal Poly in CS get hired/paid easily more then UCD undergraduates?

(My previous replies weren’t meant to be offensive, just want to be clear)

I want BS in CS, and I really cant decide which is better UCD or Cal Poly OL one.

I want to go to “UC” since its closer and definitely prestige but i am concerned that I may have to do more work then Cal Poly students and end up at same place… i mean is it really worth it choosing Cal Poly over UCD?

That’s incorrect. Cal Poly students do more work for a lower GPA. A comparison of graduating GPAs between UCD/UCI/UCSB/Cal Poly makes that abundantly clear (entering freshman roughly all have the same stats, but Cal Poly has lower final GPAs).

I wonder where people get this completely wrong and false assumptions.

Exactly, that’s why I said “all else being equal”.

Yes, I know this. However, Cal Poly has a roughly comparable student body to UCD, UCSB, & UCI…but it’s larger. And really, I just don’t think that engineering employers have comparable opinions between those schools.
