So basically, I have the choice of either going to Calpoly SLO or a community college next fall with the intention of eventually transferring to a UC. I realize that academically, Calpoly is just as strong if not stronger than most UCs, but for various personal reasons, I have my heart set on UCD.

I was wondering if the chances of me getting into UCD will be drastically affected by choosing Calpoly over a community college. I know that the rates for CC transfers are higher, but are they really that much higher? I can't find any tables or rates on the internet about transfer rates except for UCLA's, but I have little interest in going to that school anyways. And I was also wondering if it's possible to transfer out in one year from a CSU like it is in a community college. Either way, I'd be willing to work my butt off to eventually go to UCD, but having the safety net of going to Calpoly is tempting me versus the increased chance of admission in a CC.

CC students get priority. If your intend to transfer to UCD you should go to CC not SLO

CC for sure. Plus you can TAG which is a sweet deal.

Don’t create a giant headache for yourself. Going to Cal Poly to transfer to a UC will be a MASSIVE pain and complication, with no guarantee of success.

Go to a JC. No buts or ORs. Also with the massive CA funding cut, trying to transfer from one public 4 year institution to another is a near suicide mission.

Lastly, Cal Poly is an academically challenging university, period. If for whatever reason, you don’t perform very well at CP, you can kiss your UCD dream goodbye.

I’m just piling on but everyone is right. CC has priority when transferring. It’s actually easier to transfer into a UC from a CC than from another UC believe it or not. Also when you go to CC get 3.2 min gpa then TAG(Transfer Admission GUARANTEE) certified and you are set for UCD.

It is possible to transfer from a non-cc and be accepted to a uc. I transferred from a private university and got accepted into UCD, UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC with a 3.2 GPA. I got denied from UCLA and UCB because my gpa wasn’t as competitive, but that’s all my doings. If your heart is set on going to a university, go for it. However, it’s going to be a major pain because some courses won’t transfer to UC’s. I took two english classes online and was lucky enough to get some AP scores to count for credit. If you have the gpa, the extracurriculars, and all the other stuff, just take the chance. If you decide to take the cc route, make sure that the college has everything you will need to succeed. See the clubs offered, the programs you can get involved with, the courses you will need to take, etc… I would still choose my private university than go with cc, even with the stress that came with it.

I’ll let you know after Saturday if it’s possible, as I’m currently waiting on UCI’s decision for transferring from Cal Poly SLO.

Community College definitely. You are in the same dilemma I was in albeit different schools. I will be going to a JC so I can transfer into a UC and when they say community college students get priority, boy do they mean it. Also, community college classes are generally easier than HS classes and getting that 3.2 for a TAG should be no problem. Yeah you would have to live with the stigma of going to a JC but get over it. In 2 years you’ll be living it up at your Dream School.

How feasible is it to transfer as a sophomore though?
