I wouldn’t be surprised if Cal Poly surpasses all public CA universities except for UCB & UCLA in ranking based on stats of incoming freshmen enrolled students. These are the stats of the top 10 currently available on the College Board website. Cal Poly is priced well below every other school with comparable freshmen statistics, making it the most attractive option for many.

The data below is taken from UC.EDU freshmen Profile & Cal Poly Home page Preliminary New Freshman Profile Fall 2013(Cal poly score of SAT = / 2 * 3 : because it make it equivalent for the UC sat score perfect 2400)

Ranking Name of Univ ACT SAT
1 UCB 31 2076
2 UCLA 30 2052
3 UCSD 29 1992
4 Cal Poly SLO 29 1967
5 UCSB 28 1915
6 UCD 28 1906
7 UCI 27 1854
8 Univ of Washington 27 1830

Ranking of Cal Poly is 4th in 2013
This year By the hard competition in acceptance rate, I guess Cal Poly may be 3rd just behind UCB. UCLA

I’d say SLO is like Davis, SB, and Irvine. Hard to compare acceptance rates because the middle UC’s are backups for a lot of competitive UCLA and Berkeley applicants, and I’m sure many people applying to lower csu’s throw in SLO just because it is convenient. But the fact its test scores are what they are pretty much solidifies that its a great school.
