Why did they choose an arbitrary number like 10.5? Does this prevent me from signing up for three 4-unit classes? If so, would it be in my interest to sign up for two 4-unit classes required for my major (good teachers) and then perhaps a 1-unit DeCal or self-paced class?

I know the 0.5 is in there so that you can sign up for a PE class. Your plan sounds like a good one. For now, and in the future, also take into consideration which classes have high demand along with limited spots when choosing which classes to pick for phase I.

One more unrelated question: for science classes, is it better to have lab days before discussions or vice versa?

Er, I'm a little bit confused about your question. From my experience (Chem 1A, Chem 1B, Bio 1B,) the discussions and the labs are linked. In other words, if you sign up for a discussion (which comes before lab, usually) there is a corresponding lab which comes directly after it. In fact, for Chem 1A, it's just one big 4 hour chunk of lab/discussion, where the first hour is devoted to discussion.

If you're talking about something else though, I would say though that it probably doesn't matter.
