CalSO? Wuh....?

Hey so I got admitted to Berkeley, and I'm definitely excited! I'm not 100000% sure if I'm going, but there's quite a good chance.

I notice in myBerkeleyApplication there are a few mentions of CalSO--some student orientation thing where we sign up for classes and etc--apparently we can do it online and in-person.

I'm not sure if I'm going to Berkeley, but in the case I am, should I/can I sign up for classes...like...now??? I've heard that ppl should sign up for classes early at Berkeley to avoid getting waitlisted and such. Does this apply to admitted kids? Should I get moving now?

Even if I'm not sure if I'm going? Sorry if I'm being a total noob lol, any help is VERY APPRECIATED.

you won’t be able to sign up for classes until Cal So which is after you send in your SIR.

CalSO is where new freshmen first sign up for classes. Earlier CalSO date = earlier time to sign up for classes. There is no way to sign up for classes now. I don’t know when the first CalSO date is, but that’s the first day to sign up for classes (for incoming freshmen).

For most colleges, including L&S which many applied to, you are not able to sign up for classes until you have met with an advisor. That is one of the purposes of CalSO - not only orientation but advice and registering for your first classes.

However, since there are multiple CalSO sessions, signing up early gets you into an earlier one, thus giving you best pick of classes. Since you are generally seeking the starter classes for your major, you are mainly competing with other incoming freshmen.

Registration for Fall doesn’t start until middle of next month for athletes and special cases, then seniors, and so forth, but this is for the first 10 units max. The second phase, where you finish up the classes to your target load, is a July and August process. Freshmen do their first phase at CalSO instead of the dates I listed above.
