Caltech 2020 Waitlist Discussion

Any indication regarding Caltech going to the waitlist this year (2016). Last few years, numbers that got off the waitlist:
2015 - 0
2014 - 47
2013 - 0
2012 - 0
2011 - 40
2010 - 7

Thank you for compiling the data!
Any idea when we find out?

@potatoheadhala Last year, by May 7, 2015 they had released everyone. If they hit their enrollment targets, Caltech will email everyone either today or by Monday.

There is history in CC (May 3, 2011) when Caltech started calling prospects gauging their interest, followed by an offer.

My regional admissions counselor called me two days ago and offered me admission off the waitlist.

Congrats, @kumirei! That’s awesome news, good luck!

Great news @kumirei, congratulations!

For future waitlistees, it seem like Tues-Wed of the week after deposit/commit day you should get a call if you’re selected off the waitlist. And then by the end of the week, the waitlist release email goes out. The release email hasn’t gone out this Friday (May 6, 2016), but expect it on Monday.

With under 50 telephone calls to make divided across 7 regional admission counselors, Caltech is pretty quick in sorting out it’s waitlist and making the calls.

Thank you! There might be some people who decide not to attend Caltech after getting off the waitlist, so I’m not sure if they’ve reached their enrollment target yet. I won’t be sending in my response until I’ve seen my financial aid award, so they might be calling more people in the upcoming weeks? Good luck everyone!

I stand corrected @kumirei. In 2015, I think Caltech overenrolled (241) and quickly shut down the waitlist (by May 7, 2015). However, in 2014 the final email indicating that they had hit their enrollment target went out around June 3, 2014. That year, they did take in 47 off the waitlist.

This year (2016), given that you did get a call, means that Caltech is going to use the waitlist… and that things may be in flux between now and early June.

Curious about how long have they given for waitlist prospects to decide?

Thanks…and best of luck for a wonderful undergrad experience!

@MaximusMeridius - do we have any idea how many people have enrolled this year?

@MaximusMeridius They give 7 days for waitlist prospects to decide.

Not sure @potatoheadhala about how many enrolled in 2016, but here is more historical data for everyone’s amusement (taken from Common Data + Caltech website):

Year - Apply - Acp - %Acp - WLT - WLYes - WLAcpt - Enrl - %Yield
2015 - 6530*- 588 - 09% - - ??? - - ??? - - - 0 - - - - - -241 - ??%
2014 - 6525 - 576 - 09% - - 615 - - 482 - - - 47- - - - - 226 - 39%
2013 - 5535 - 584 - 11% - - 550 - - 432 - - - 0 - - - - - -248 - 42%
2012 - 5537 - 651 - 12% - - 651 - - 457 - - - 0- - - - - - 264 - 41%
2011 - 5225 - 667 - 13% - - 556 - - 336 - - - 40 - - - - -244 - 37%
2010 - 4859 - 610 - 13% - - 529 - - 337 - - - 7- - - - - - 222 - 36%

*estimate. Caltech profile indicates > 6500 for 2015, so let’s assume its a little greater than 2014. When the common data for 2015 is published, the real numbers will come out.

Observations:

  1. if yield is > 40%, the waitlist is shut-off.
  2. if more than 240-ish enroll, then waitlist is shut-off, with the exception of 2011.

Guesswork for 2016:

  1. The number of applicants probably hasn’t increased dramatically. It should be in the 6550 range, max 6600.
  2. The acceptance rate should trend downwards towards 8-8.5%.
  3. The yield should be around 39-40%.

So, the min-max range for pre-waitlist enrollment for 2016 should be (drumroll): 204 - 224. And I think Caltech tries to keep their targets around 225-230, so given that we have at least 1 person confirming that the waitlist is in play, we could be looking at 5-25 waitlist spots for 2016.

I talked to my regional coordinator. She has said that only 5 or so students have been taken off the waitlist. They are very close to filling their required class. It is still possible for others to forfeit their deposits so the work can go on till 15 July. Who knows? Best of luck everyone!

Thanks @OmnipotentSaber - that’s consistent with the information that we have received, although yours is more precise.

@kumirei - Did you accept? If so, congratulations. Caltech is an amazing place.

Anybody still in this thread?? I wonder if more acceptances are actually coming. Can’t really think of a good reason why they haven’t sent out the “we are full” email… Maybe they think people who have already accepted the offer might drop out because they got off the wait list somewhere else?

@shostakovich4ever - Caltech officially has stated that they will keep the list open till July 15. Historically, they have either shut it down quickly (oversubscribed e.g., 241 in 2015) or they’ve sent the final email in early June when they did take in waitlistees. My guess is that they have taken the 5 or so, but there will be minor movement when the likes of Harvard - MIT finalize. Incidentally, MIT has given until May 25th for it’s waitlist offers. Good luck!

The wait continues…

@MaximusMeridius and @potatoheadhala are you guys still hoping to get off the Caltech waitlist? Which college are you guys planning to go to otherwise?

I got off the waitlist about a week ago and chose to accept after a few people were already saying they were offered admission so they might be moving in waves?

@nhnct21 Could I ask what date you were given to respond by?

@shostakovich4ever this past friday
