Is Caltech anyone here’s first choice? Or is it second to MIT for everyone?

Caltech is my first, if only because it’s closer to home

First! I can’t imagine any other! Though I’ll have to change that soon…

It’s an amazing place, but not among my top five choices, and that’s mainly because Caltech rarely accepts international students with aid.

It’s definitely first for me. Still deciding whether 2nd is MIT or Harvey Mudd.

What do you guys see in Caltech over places like HYPSM? Is it the small size? The nerdiness? The weather, lol? I personally applied because I liked the levels of active undergraduate research and the close-knittedness.

But the small size and the (relative) lack of diversity are the reasons I wouldn’t go there over HYPSM

I applied to MIT/Caltech/Chicago EA, got into all except deferred to Caltech lol

Still waiting on a decision (weather <3), although I’ll probably go to MIT…

I applied to 3 of the HYPSM, but Caltech is first on my list because they seem to have more rigorous academics.

MIT is by far my top choice, but Caltech is tied with Princeton as second on my list. Stanford doesn’t have a strong enough program in my major, and Harvard and Yale just suck at basically everything STEM-related.

I originally thought the best education for physicists/mathematicians would be at Caltech since they have the most rigorous classes (at least in general). Now I don’t think so. I think the most brilliant scientists and mathematicians, the ones who find truly original ideas, do so because they have been able to think without distraction for years at a time. I worry that at Caltech I would be so inundated with day-to-day work that I would never be able to sit and think without pressure to get something done…

Thus my first choice is Chicago, since I think I could get into HA and focus on math. Then probably a tie between Caltech, MIT, and Princeton. I doubt I will be accepted to any of these schools though, so I am not particularly picky, and would still be happy to go to Caltech.

@NWskier
Totally agreed. Maybe it’s the case that for engineering majors, a larger workload is necessary. But I wanna go for math and I feel like I’ll need more time and freedom.

Has anyone contacted the admissions office? I emailed them, but no reply yet. I can’t call bcoz I live in India.

@BetterThanBest I hope they will answer sometime today. They probably didn’t answer yet because it was Sunday yesterday. It would be great if you could share their answer with us, in case they reply :)

I’m mainly interested in Caltech because of the academic rigour and their involvement with JPL. I also love the atmosphere there. Very humble people, atleast most of them are. And their prank traditions! Caltech is truly unique.

I’m a little worried about the social situation at Caltech, personally. I feel like it takes a special kind of person to enjoy the environment there and have fun, and I don’t think I fit that profile.
That weather doe

See I’m the kinda person who doesn’t see college as a purely academic endeavor. That’s why I, like typicalcynic, am a little skeptical about attending Caltech, even if I am accepted. I’m not concerned that I won’t be able to do the work there; I’m more worried that I won’t have time to excel in anything else. Also the small size of the school will probably limit the amount of diversity… and I want to attend a school with a great exposure to the world.

@akashaka
Yeeee that’s what I’m talking about!
I wanna chillaaax
Not like, not care about school or something, but I wanna easily find people I mesh with. All I’m saying is Caltech seems a bit homogeneous nahmean?

I couldn’t agree more with @akashaka.
I emailed the Caltech Admissions office yesterday notifying them for an award I received this weekend, and they responded saying thanks for letting them know! I also called today asking if they have a set decision date, and they said “No, but you should be finding out real soon.” Should be interesting if I actually manage to get in (extremely low test scores but research experience/publications).
