Caltech "Girls Only" Acceptances

A good friend of mine runs the Caltech chapter of SWE (Society of/for Women Engineers), and according to her, they've had record participation from the freshmen in their freshmen mentoring program this year. I think she said it was something like 50% of the freshmen women signed up? It might even have been as high as 70%.

Regarding glomming and fears of such things--Caltech is a place where a lot of people, guys and girls alike, learn a lot about social skills and personal interaction. As mentioned above, sometimes glomming is just a guy being socially inept. It happens. If you're sending hints that it's unwelcome, and he's not picking them up, try being more direct and actually telling him. That usually works. Sometimes there are guys who are downright creepy, but they're few and far between, and there are UCCs (upperclass counselors; undergraduates), RAs (resident associates; grad students), and the counseling center (with tons of awesome people staffing it) to help you out if you find yourself in a situation that you're uncomfortable with.
