Caltech GPA

How does Caltech calculate high school GPA for the admission purposes? I cannot find this information anywhere. Do they include freshman year or not? Do they include classes taking outside the school for GPA purposes or not? Do they give extra value to AP / honors classes or not?
Thank you.

They check to see whether you will survive Caltech. Your school provides unweighted and weighted (if applicable). Depending on how they are displayed, admissions will recalculate to adjust to a standard scale. Of course, AP/IB/Honors courses will always benefit you when you perform well in them. If your school considers dual enrollment courses in your GPA, then they will be found on your transcript which your high school will in turn send to Caltech (or any other college for that matter). Otherwise, you will have to send it in separately at your own expense. Any college courses you have taken will, like the AP/IB/yada-yada classes, benefit you if you performed well because it demonstrates you can handle heavier courseloads and more demanding schedules. From what I am aware of, freshman GPA is considered along with the rest of your high school grades.

 • Caltech does not have a minimum GPA requirement. However, most successful applicants have a US GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and/or are in the top 5 to 10% of their class.
 • GPA’s should only be reported for those schools attended in the United States. International GPA’s or rankings do not need to be converted to the standard US grade point average.

Based on what I have seen, Caltech does seem to have a pretty holistic admission process

I totally agree that the admissions process is very holistic. Grades aren’t the deal breaker so don’t worry about them too much. Really focus on the essays - esp the supplements.

Also GPA is calculated differently depending on what school you are attending. My impression is that most public schools grade a lot easier than prep schools.
