Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):
Essays (Include Subjects):
Honor Code essay was about using my notes during open-book tests in my online Algebra II class, and how I felt that it was cheating because the problems on the test were so similar to the ones in the book (made a point of contrasting that course with proof-based calculus to not-so-subtly let them know I wasn’t suicidal lol). 9/10.
Quirky fun was about how I write fanfiction in my free time and co-wrote a story with my friends (of course, I didn’t call it fanfiction, I called it “spin-off stories”). 8/10.
Diversity one was about how my participation in Model UN gave me a different perspective on science. 8/10? I was just happy I came up with something other than ethnicity (Indian).
Caltech essay: I wrote it through the eyes of me as a future student, incorporating how seminars such as Dance of the Photons would let me explore interesting subjects in a very discussion-oriented manner, the collaborative community would help with study sessions, and the honor code would allow me to take my tests in comfort so I could focus on content and learning. I personally thought it was creative. Dare I say 10/10?

Common App Main: About how the nuclear physics summer camp I attended was an environment where I was perfectly content, both because of the learning and because of the people I met there. 9/10.

What drew you to STEM: I talked about how E.T. inspired me to study astronomy, and how activities such as Science Olympiad and the Astronomy Club that I started helped further develop and allowed me to explore science so that I fell in love with it.

Recommendations/Interview:
Teacher Recommendation #1: AP Government teacher – he was very enthusiastic about writing my recommendation letter, so I’d say 9/10, though I didn’t read it.

Teacher Recommendation #2: My physics teacher. I saw his letter for a program I applied to earlier, and it was decent (well, it did point out some of my social flaws, but idk if he included those in my college rec letters). 7/10

Counselor Rec: I’m assuming it was good but really I have no idea.

Additional Rec: My teacher for my online astrophysics class I took sophomore year, who was also my research mentor my junior year.

Interview: Did not have one.

Other
Date Submitted App: Definitely before December 10, which was my school’s deadline so they could get everything in on time. I think I submitted sometime around Thanksgiving break, give or take a week or two.

State (if domestic applicant): O-H-I-O. I was considered an international applicant until the last minute because I didn’t have my green card, but I sent it in a week before decisions came out, so I assume they took that into account and considered me domestic eventually.

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Highly-ranked public school. Ranked #1 in the local area.

Ethnicity: Asian (Indian)

Gender: Female

Income Bracket: 120k-140k (idk what the bracket ranges typically are). Applied for aid.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): The possession of two X chromosomes, maybe interest in astrophysics? (Idk if that’s a hook at Caltech, but they are big in the astro field, and not too many people in general are interested in astro specifically?)

Reflection
Strengths: My application was definitely a reflection of who I was, especially my essays. Heck, I wrote about writing fanfiction as an essay for a science and tech school! But my interest in science also definitely shone through as well.

Weaknesses: Lack of decent math/science accolades (73.5 on AMC 12, but don’t remember if I reported it). Nothing in physics/chemistry olympiads, international science fairs, etc.

Why you think you were accepted: I’m still shocked that I got accepted, but I guess my activities demonstrated my passion for science, and they saw potential?

What would you have done differently?: Well, in terms of admission I got in, so I guess what I did was good enough. But in general, I would’ve focused more on math and science competitions. I didn’t know about them until I was in high school, and I didn’t know or really consider physics olympiad until this year (so naturally I tanked). By that time, it was too late to make significant progress with stuff like AMC (though based on my progress this year, I think I could’ve done it if I’d tried harder in earlier years). Ditto with learning programming so that I could do physics/astro projects for science fairs (chemistry would’ve been hard to get into a lab w/o parental connections, I feel).

Other Factors: Well, I also helped start the National Astronomy Olympiad with a few other kids (two of whom now attend Caltech). I wrote emails and created a petition, and collaborated with others to help start it. I helped grade tests, and this year though I’m taking the test myself, I will try to help out with writing proposals for finances and stuff). I wrote about that in a miscellaneous essay, so I suppose there’s that leadership thing too.

General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc: Caltech was my 3rd acceptance, and my first acceptance from a school I genuinely want to attend. I’m so happy and thrilled, and quite shocked to be honest. I know I shouldn’t let a college decision mean so much to me, but my self esteem has been pretty low this year and this acceptance made it go right back up! Plus, Caltech is my dream school, so I am super excited! I got rejected from MIT, but now I do feel that I can get into a place that will be a good fit for me, and though I’m worried that I’m not “nerdy enough” for Caltech (I couldn’t study for 8+ hours straight, am not a hard-core math or science nerd in terms of amount of knowledge, etc.), I think this might also be the risk I need to take to prove to myself what I can accomplish. Congratulations to all who got in! And to those who didn’t, never fear! The fact that you applied shows that you care about math, science, or engineering, and that passion is one of the most important things you’ll need in the field. You have what you need to succeed, and you all will be accepted at the places which are good fits for you. No matter what, you’ll have that passion and drive to succeed, and that’s the most important thing.

[]Essays: I think my essays are what got me in. For my first, I talked about my summer experiences at the Ross Mathematics Camp doing PSets, Science Bowl, and how I got my teacher and classmates to check for Polyphagus Shot Hole Borers in trees. For my second, I also talked about how I like to spend my time working on Rube Goldberg Machines. For the remaining, I talked about how I saw myself at a particular house at Caltech and how my drawing skills would be valued at an engineering school like Caltech. Overall around a 9/10.

[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: I think the main thing that future applicants should focus on is what they love to do. This has been repeated multiple times, over and over, but for good reason. I love biology and I love to teach so I decided pretty early on that I would commit myself to these. Granted, I did some things that weren’t so focused on a particular area. I experimented. I joined my school’s newspaper editorial team, did some speech and debate, etc. But at the end of the day, I found out what it is I truly loved to do and did them. Also, don’t get caught up on grades, scores, etc. I was worried for a very long time about the smallest details in my resume but so many people have somewhat similar objective stats that it’s not worth for college admission officers to care too much about them. TL;DR: Essays matter, Do what you love

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Mechnical Engineering
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): Iran
School Type: Private
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: <30000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):

Reflection:

Strengths: I had an invention idea that would change the world which I explained in my essays but I think they didn’t payed attention, senior year course load.

What you tried to focus on in your application - any hooks you tried to make for yourself: My invention idea

Weaknesses: I’m totally weak, my scores, being from Iran, neading huge amount of financial aid, no major awards.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Look at the weaknesses

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected: MIT, Case Western Reserve University.

Notes: As it seams colleges and universities pay more attention to achievements and numbers than I tought. But they forget that all these are circumstantial, I even didn’t know for example that there are events like robotics cmpetetions. All I asked from admissions office is to first look at all those difficulties I’ve had to deal with, my family’s circumstances and sacrifices they have made, the struggles that I have made, and the nights that I’ve not slept just to have a little more time to study, and take into consideration that I was lonely in this path and I myself had to find my own way and as a result I’ve had to experience everything on my own and this has consumed a lot of time. Consequently, I’ve always dropped behind and straggled. In Olympiads, In Tournaments of the Towns, and in SAT I had just a little time to get prepared. It may seem that I’m trying to make excuses, but after all these are the facts. Now, please take a look at what I have achieved: my invention ideas, high SAT Subject scores and GPA, Tournaments of the Towns. I think you will agree that I’m dreadfully determined and motivated, I’m acquainted deeply with adverse circumstances and more able to overcome them, I’m assiduous in my studies, and I toil to reach my goals, but the admissions office didn’t.

Wow, @RestlessSpirit‌ your accomplishments are definitely amazing! I imagine you are quite disappointed, but I’m genuinely quite amazed at what you’d accomplished even before I realized you were from Iran! Honestly, I think their only concern was probably English ability, since they do want a certain amount of fluency so that they can be sure you can understand the classes. Otherwise you are definitely the STEM kind of guy that not only colleges want but the world wants. You will definitely do amazing things no matter where you end up! You’re really quite admirable

Oh thanks very much @spacelover17, it’s really good to hear those words from someone. I really mean it.

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essays, Essays, Essays. I honestly think they’re the reason I managed to get on the waitlist. Also, my stats were pretty solid.
[
] Weaknesses: ECs were weak, especially in STEM areas. I’m honestly not surprised as I didn’t even make science bowl or math team at my own school, and the captains for those teams didn’t get in either.
[] Accepted: UCLA, UCSD, UC Irvine (Campus Honors Program), Washington (Purple and Gold Scholarship)
[
] Schools you were rejected from? MIT
[li] Schools you are waiting for? The entire Ivy League plus Stanford[/li][/ul]General Comments: I’ll take it. I honestly thought I was going to get rejected, like it was a reach and I didn’t have any ECs related to science or math. I only applied because my mom works for JPL, but even then, I wasn’t expecting to get in. I honestly think my essays were what made a huge difference because there were a lot of kids at my school more qualified for a place like Caltech that got waitlisted or rejected. Good luck to those of you that got in and those of us on the waitlist!

[

[] Essays: common app essay - pretty good. for 3 experiences that got me interested in STEM: 1) math competitions, 2) ross, 3) meeting people from (1) and (2) (kinda redundant now thinking about it but w/e). Ethical dilemma was helping a kid I was tutoring finish a course in time for him to graduate without cheating through the course. Quirky way in which I have fun - I talked about a game I invented that’s fun. Diversity was South Florida and the diverse people here (I talked about a sport called jai-alai which used to be popular in Miami). For the why Caltech essay, I just talked about the rigor and the math program and research opportunities (just basically what I liked about Caltech). I r8 all my essays 8/8 m8.

[/ul]Advice[ul]
[li] I agree with the advice given by good interrupt… I like math so I did math. Keep in mind that thousands (im guessing) of applicants have SAT scores that are sufficiently good and good grades so just having those two won’t help. Also, from people I know, trying to be the applicant “that is not only good at math and science, but is great at x” (where x could be something like painting) without showing that you are good at math and science (apart from grades and scores) will get you flat out rejected.[/li][/ul]

Reflection

Strengths: I have taken the toughest course load possible at my HS, and I am also the valedictorian. My ECs show that I am well rounded.
Weaknesses: I have not done anything extraordinary in any of my ECs, and my test scores are not the strongest although I did not have to send my inadequate SAT score to any college that didn’t require it.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: nowhere but state schools
Waitlisted: Duke, Northwestern, UChicago, Vanderbilt
Rejected: Caltech, MIT, Swarthmore

General Comments: Pretty bummed that I haven’t gotten in anywhere. Not quite sure how any of those waitlists are going to turn out. Just waiting on the Ivies now.

Congratulations to everyone that got in!

Hustle I guess. With high test scores and applying to good universities where Aff.Action is against you, it’s the passion and what you can contribute to the campus that they care about. It’s sketch but yeah, different schools give more importance to different parts of the application. Excel or try to excel at one subject/activity that interests you, but explore other things and if they interest you, spend time on those too. Doing things just for college never hurts  but, in my experience, colleges prefer the “king of the trade”, rather than the “jack of all trades” encouraged by the “well-rounded” notion. Yet some evidence of other interests and expressing diversity in some form is necessary. From my results, it’s pretty obvious that each college is different.

WL students, I created a thread for us to discuss the WL.
