caltech-ucsd program

anyone doing that?

No. It's new, so this year's batch of applicants are going to be the first to be in the Caltech-UCSD Medical Scholars Program.

I just got rejected...wondered what they looked at...do they still look at SAT scores or is it more like where you showed your interest? Cuz I took nothing but physics and calc in highschool...maybe why I didn't even get an interview.

I doubt SATs have that large of a factor because the sat cut off was 2250 and that's relatively high. I think you probably needed another factor as a hook.

dianal, how do you know the cutoff?

"The first students admitted in the fall of 2007 will be selected in the course of the regular undergraduate admissions process at Caltech, and will also be further screened and approved by the UCSD School of Medicine. Typical medical scholars will have been involved in biomedical research and/or clinical endeavors at the high school level, and, like all other students at Caltech and the UCSD School of Medicine will have excellent grades and test scores."

wow. Sorry about the misinformation. I just remember reading something that said that a 2250 was required but it's been months since I read that material.

But chances are since it's at Caltech, the SAT scores will be high just to be competitive in the pool.

this program is crap...who the hell would want to go through caltech before med school...college is supposed to be the best time in your life, and @ caltech, you get:
1.No Social Life (greek scene is nonexistent)
2.No Sleep
3.Guys that bathe maybe once a week, if you're lucky
4.A 3:1 Male to Female ratio (and the girls leave a lot to be desired)
5.Constant, suffocating competition

*Do yourself a favor, and go to a school where you can actually have a good time while getting a great education.

... southernazn, you don't seem to be very familiar with Caltech.

Greek Scene and Social Life are not synonymous. We don't need a Greek system because of our house system, and I don't think most students here would want one. That aside, to suggest that there is no social life here is absurd. If you're looking to party all week, yea, that's not Caltech... but who comes here to party? Each house does social events its own way, and virtually everyone who attends Caltech can find many activities that he/she enjoys.

OK, this one is true... although I get on average eight-nine hours of sleep a night, you definitely sleep less here than some other places.

There are a few... but only a few... and I'd say that they are able to exist at Caltech precisely because of its incredibly tolerable environment. Sure, it lends to a few smelly people, but it's a small price to pay for the awesome community here. (I only know two or three people who are consistently smelly and none of them are in my House... so it's not like I have to smell them frequently)

2.5:1, not 3:1... but yea, the ratio is definitely existent

This is really the farthest off--it makes me wonder how much you know about Tech. Caltech is the antithesis of competitive--yes, it's hard, very hard, but everyone works together here. It is one of the least competitive schools I know of.

Finally, I've gotta say that I'm proud to go to a school where I have a great time while getting an amazing education!

wouldn't a hard program condition you for med school?

In med school, recs start counting quite a bit as well. So, it'd be important to build great work habits, foster a creative mind and all the good stuff that Caltech does to you. I think the students from this program would have a head start except then they wouldn't have to study for Mcats, which may not be a great thing to skip. I'm not too familiar with that test though.

southernazn918 --

Just to back up lizzardfire, you clearly know nothing whatsoever about Caltech if you think there is "competition". Is it "competition" when someone will stay up an extra hour to explain a hard problem to someone he barely knows, even though there's an exam the next day? Or when people bring stacks of exams to their dorm so that people don't have to walk to get them? Or when virtually nobody knows or much cares what other people's GPA's are? These are very deeply ingrained parts of the Caltech culture.

Indeed, "competition" (in the stupidest, pettiest sense) is a typical aspect of the vast majority of premed programs, but is virtually unheard of at Caltech. It might be better to restrict your discourse to schools with which you are familiar.

I got an interview!

wow rickpaul80, do you mind sharing your stats?

I received an interview & I have SAT's below 2200. So, for those of you in the future who have similar scores, don't sell yourself too short! :)
