Caltech Up Close 2023

My S24 is applying for Caltech upclose for this fall and will apply regular decision as well. Does anyone have insight on whether being invited to apply means anything? My son thinks everyone on their mailing list was invited to apply and if that is the case I assume his chances of getting it are not especially high. Curious if anyone else’s kid is looking into this experience.

They admit anywhere from 200 to 250 freshman, world-wide. All 3 of our children were “invited to apply”. I think they target the NMS populations nationwide.

It is a “research institution” so he needs to know that it is not a “typical” college experience.
Our son was admitted there. Does your son want a small environment like that?

The more s24 learns about Caltech the more he likes! Luckily he knows a student there and has been able to get an insider perspective as well. His summer research program is preparing him for future research as well and he is enjoying that. We live in Southern California so have had an opportunity to visit.

I got the email a couple of months ago. I’ve read that only between 20-80 people are selected to apply, but i’ve also read that about 300 people choose to apply and only 35 are admitted. Because I’ve heard different things even among students who work in admissions, I have no clue who all gets the email. I think that the first reply was talking about admission into the college, not the fly in program, but I definitely will be back in September when the results come out.

Same, I also applied as well.

My S24 submitted his application yesterday! Feels like a precursor to all the submissions for college apps that are going to happen in the next few months. Decisions are expected in a bout 1 month.

Hopefully we can all get in! I noticed they had some issues with the word limits for the individual experiences prompt… Some thought it was 100 words each to have a total of 200 while others thought 200 each. I think they’ll be understanding considering there will be a variety of students doing both (the limits were not explained properly and the individual response boxes did not have any limit system which just made it all the more confusing).

Caltech up close results will be released this Saturday per an email S24 received yesterday. He isn’t really in the targeted demographic but would be awesome if he gets in. On the other hand if he doesn’t get it, it’s probably not that big of a deal!

Hopefully we both get in then! Would be lovely to see California!

Yea I talked to the CUC staff and they mentioned that they accept ~200 people into the fly in program which was quite surprising to me. Unfortunatley they couldn’t disclose the number of people who applied in past years.

And yea, results are coming out tomorrow at I think 8:54 AM? Caltech sent an email that had a puzzle about what time the results would be realeased lol.

I did the calculations and got around 8:24. Idk if it is am or pm. And I don’t know what time zone it is for.

got rejected :frowning:

Does anyone know if everyone who applies gets the fee waiver even though rejected?

S24 rejected and got a fee waiver. He is down with the rejections for both MIT and Caltech fly in programs within 24 hours. Hopefully this motivates him to complete his applications rather than feeling discouraged.

Yes everyone gets one.
