Question: S got got into some great schools but has narrowed his search to CalTech and Stanford. I know fit is important and he is visiting soon but if he wants to study Computer Engineering, what is the best choice considering his financial aid packages??? At CalTech we will need to pay $9600 per year including student and parent contribution... at Stanford we will need to pay $17600 per year for both PLUS he will need to earn another $2800 from work study which is not required at CalTech. Aside from "fit", what do other engineers think about the value of the two programs?

both are among the top few engineering schools in the country

however, the rankings show that Stanford could very well be the top computer science and engineering school in the country, with Caltech ranking closer to higher than #10…

that said, you are talking about what could be the top PURE sciences/engineering school in the country with 900 undergraduates (2,100 total) compared to one of the best science/egineering schools with other top Humanities and Social Sciences departments and although a manageable 6,700 undergraduates (about 20,000 total), still a much larger university…

It looks like Stanford has the edge here based on the quality of the department, but realistically the student has to pay a visit to each, which should immediately convince him of one or the other…

oh, by the way, the $10,000/yr or $40,000 is a lot of money to many people, so it could very well be decided that the differences are not enough to warrant going to Stanford over Caltech
