CalTech vs CalPoly?

I've heard of CalPoly, but CalTech?

You haven't heard of CalTech? California Institute of Technology?

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo is comparable to UCSB, UCD & UCI as far as entering stats are concerned.

Cal Tech is really only comparable to HYPSM in regards to entering stats (and one of the premier institutes for technical research and learning in the US).

ahhhh....yeah my dad keeps trying to get me to apply to CalPoly and i thought it was ridiculous...
so CalTech is a Stanford, just less known?

Cal Tech is very well known in technical circles. It's a smaller, more prestigious version of MIT.

= 100 vs 1

is CalPoly still respectable?

CalPoly is respectable, it's just not at the level of a CalTech.

CalTech is also very small & in Pasadena. It's about as tough to get into as MIT & there are quite a few students who apply to both schools. There is a "friendly rivalry" between the two schools, where the do geek pranks on one another.
Santa Clara University is another school that has a good engineering program & good internship opportunities, especially due to its location in/near Silicon Valley.
Both CalTech and Santa Clara U are smaller private schools & would cost more than in-state publics for CA residents (unless you get merit or need-based aid).

Caltech is the west coast's version of MIT. It is not a spinoff, however. It has its own unique student body and is renown for producing some of the top mathematicians and scientists of our time. Caltech (in my opinion) has a far superior engineering program to CalPoly, though Caltech is very heavy in the theory of such things as the intrinsic study of engineering sciences... like a rigorous approach to electronics and fluids rather than a directly applicable one.

I get the feeling (from working with grads from both places) that Caltech students know a lot more of the "why" systems do the things they do. It is a different level of understanding... which you'd only get at a few institutions in the States. If you'd like to contrast MIT and Caltech things get a little fuzzy. Though they have very similar applicant pools (pretty equally qualified) many consider MIT an institution that has a slight engineering flare while Caltech has a slight science flare.

I'm not saying that Caltech is necessarily better than CalPoly for everyone, though. If you don't want all of the rigorous "why" background (like a scientist) and you really want to jump into more applicational engineering CalPoly may be better for you.

Nah im not trying to see which one was better, I was just confused haha

Santa Clara is nowhere as good as Caltech. Not even close.
