I got waitlisted at Caltech... So I suppose two outcomes are possible. I'm not a strong enough applicant for MIT... or I'm a good contender, considering the general consensus is that MIT is more holistic (i've had a lot of music EC's in addition to research).

Any past people been rejected to CIT but accepted to MIT? or the other way around?

I’m on the same boat, I’ve been wait listed to Caltech, but scores are not my strong suite, and i was seriously expecting rejection from Caltech.

Honestly, I would say that trying to correlate any relationship between the two is pointless. I don’t mean to detract from you as an applicant, and I realize the thought process at the moment (as I am going through the same), but trying to get hints out of other schools is dangerous. I know it is going to be a very long 48 hours, but just wait and see what happens. If you were waitlisted at Caltech, it means you had the stats and scores to be considered and wanted by the school; waitlist just means they couldn’t fit you on the class list, YET. MIT and CIT are different, just wait to see the ultimate outcome.

Last year my son was accepted at MIT and waitlisted at Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern. Sometimes I think you can’t figure it out but I can certainly understand trying!

So, I realize that you guys have said this is pointless. I realize. Really.

But you see I just got waitlisted from Caltech and I don’t know what to make of it. I have good scores, good extracurriculars, and bad grades. Note that I said good not great, actually the ECs could be slightly above good by a small margin and I couldn’t really have gotten a much better score if we exclude the W section. I am also an URM female.

Does MIT do more affirmative action? Do they look beyond grades? >.< I can’t wait for this rejection anymore. I thought it was certain but then the school with minimal AA waitlists me.

So my tirade ends here. Thanks for listening.

@unliMIT: You have less than 24 hrs to wait, I know it’s stressful (Inside, I’m dying too, lol), but you have to keep it together and wait. You should be honored that you got waitlisted and not rejected at CIT. I said it once and I will say it again, “it means you had the stats and scores to be considered and wanted by the school; waitlist just means they couldn’t fit you on the class list, YET.”

Anyways, if you got WL at Caltech you must have something special that they saw. I hope that MIT sees the same or better and you get admitted :)

I’ve seen results go both ways. While CalTech and MIT are often looking for similar students, they aren’t actually looking for the same students. You might be able to fit both places, or you may only be suited for one over the other.

I wouldn’t squint too hard at your Caltech decision and try to get an MIT decision out of it.

OMG, THIS IS BUGGING ME TOO MUCH!!! YOU GUYS REALIZE THAT CIT IS MORE COMMONLY ACCEPTED AS CARNEGIE INSTITUTE IN TECHNOLOGY! Caltech is referred Caltech…Also, I know plenty of students accepted to MIT and denied from Caltech, colleges are weird and a lot of times stupid. Stats do matter but colleges are absolutely stupid and random sometimes (not speaking out of rage). I know tons of people accepted to schools and are way less qualified as others and I know some profound geniuses who didn’t keep a 4.0 in high school and didn’t get into the BEST school or their 1st choice. I think colleges should try to look more into the students personality.

The Probability of getting into MIT times Probability of getting into Caltech = Probability of Getting into both MIT and Caltech. Thereby, the events are independent of one another and you have nothing to worry about!
