Are they using the waitlist this year? Anyone get any response?

I’m also on the waitlist! I haven’t heard anything, but I imagine they’ll start contacting people shortly (if they are, in fact, using the waitlist). I’m hoping their yield will go down due to the financial recession, but that’s only speculation on my part. We’ll see …

I think our yield went up last year, when the recession was worse.

apple1984, I am in a very similar situation. Accepted UChicago admission offer but hoping for CalTech. Either way, I am happy.

^^Out of curiosity, how does recession factor into yield?

People might prefer to go to a different school instead where it may be cheaper.

So…if recession was worse, then the yield would go down right? More people wouldn’t want to go to private school.

Or more people would want to go to a private school because the public schools in California are getting more crowded as the budget cuts/recession goes on.

Last year I was told that more people enrolled than expected, so they could not take anyone from the wait list. They has a class of about 250 instead of the expected 220-230. This year the number of admits is less than last year, as this did not want to over admit like last year i.e. they cut down the number of people they made offers to compared to last year. Hence, there is a chance of the wait list being opened as even a small change in yield will may allow a few from the wait list. Good luck to all of you/

^If God loves me, I will get that waitlist spot!

Anyone has updates on what the yield was this year?

I called a few days ago, and they said that the director was out of town, so they won’t have any info until early next week (this week).

riker7, calling in is probably good because admissions wants to know if you’re still interested in Caltech. You should remind them of why you want to go and how much you want it
As to the recession thing, I read somewhere that Caltech students graduate with very low debt. Maybe that’s it?

But when does calling just become annoying to them?

^Call them under various aliases >;]

hey good luck to all you Caltech waitlists.

I was waitlisted at numerous places as well, and I fell your pain :)

But hey, if I get off a wait-list another spot will open up at Caltech :D

It would be sublime if the waitlist opens up.

In previous years Caltech usually went to the waitlist in around the first week or so of May. Things are looking pretty bleak right about now. I hope it’s not like last year where they didn’t use the waitlist.

Does any one has information on the yield? That might provide some information on the status of the W/L.

I was just reading a PDF file of the school newspaper and I found this little blurb: “Frosh: We have 228 frosh, and we saved spots for 18 more than that! We can potentially give spots back to houses. Everyone thinks it’s a good idea to save some rooms for transfer students; we’ll let presidents talk to their houses about what they want to do.” It seems like that 228 is the amount of committed students this year and from what I’ve read elsewhere the admissions staff was shooting for around 200 to make up for last years over enrollment. So waitlist is not looking so good.
