CALTECH YESS Summer Program 2009

@big dreamer
Wow, they put me as sophomore too while i am actually a junior! i hope this is not the reason that i didn’t get in…

I had bad test scores (1920 SAT), hardest courseload @ my school, invented several dozen things, applying for patents and grants, some regional science awards, like 400 hrs of community service so far, etc…rejected. I am wondering too, but I am white.

@firevswater: NOOO! If this kept us out, I’d be SO mad hahah

@big dreamer
wow, you’re quite the inventor! lol i wonder why they didn’t pick you.

Well, they did have 1500+ applicants and it’s focused on minorities and I don’t know. You seem very accomplished though. I’m Asian so that might have been one factor lol. Plus, my grades weren’t that great for junior year (so far) even though I’m taking the hardest courseload and I’ve done 220+ comm service hours. 2010 sat.

One more thing which is kind of weird. I just checked my other e-mail (not for school stuff/college/SAT) and the rejection e-mail was also sent there. I wonder how they got that e-mail even though I didn’t mention it anywhere on my app.

I can’t believe they would make a mistake that like (junior vs. soph).

@hpaero1: Thanks! haha, yeah inventing is my little thing. And I can’t believe that they got 1500+ applications, isn’t that double from last year? Yeah I mean I did get a 79 in math first semester, even though I have like 86 now. Sleeping issues really messed me up in math this year :confused: Yeah, that really seems weird. I mean I would think that if on my app, transcript, and SAT scores it said that I’m a junior, then why they made a mistake like that.

WOW that’s freakish, don’t know how they got that email. I guess it’s Caltech, should we be surprised? haha :p

@Massparent: I got into Entrada Scholars @ Calvin College in Michigan. It’s free except for transport to it and $500 enrollment. You take a college course on campus and stay there for 4 weeks.

Congratulations Jayay90! that sounds wonderful–be proud! It is great to find these no-cost summer programs and they tend to be the best ones…most exclusive.

@big dreamer
that’s cool! what kind of things do you invent? (if you don’t mind me asking)
I know, it’s like a double. Ohhh, I see. Are you taking calculus? Oh I know! My lack of sleep and not having enough time to study is seriously messing up my gpa this year (the year that’s apparently most important when applying to colleges) + hard courseload + hard teachers =p. Yeah. That is definitely odd.

Lol, I’m still kind of like… ummm where did you get my other e-mail from??? I never post it on college sites and stuff.

I’ve never been to CA so it would’ve been nice to get accepted, but more time to focus on college apps and other stuff. yay…kinda.

aw rejected. oh well, i just hope ssp gives me enough aid so i can go! have fun in pasadena, everyone who got in!

@hpaero1:
I’ve invented all sorts of things, from side-impact safety systems, green engines, few medical devices, new type of headphone, etc. I mentioned that I invented 34 or so in my essay, but I guess that’s not impressive enough :/

I have yet to get a patent, but have drawings and like business plan for almost every one. Thanks! Now I don’t have a summer program, but I guess I can do some more volunteering this summer…and yesssss, doing all those apps will be tricky.

This year has been aweful. I mean my GPA will still be like mid-3.8s by year’s end. I am in pre-cal, only kids who take math over the summer can jump ahead to calculus before junior year here (or if they are really smart).

Same! Really wanted to check it out, but I guess that it wasn’t meant to be.

Woot! I got in. And I totally agree, we should definitely start a facebook group. Does this site have PM?
