CALTECH YESS Summer Program 2009

hey I just got my acceptance email from YESS. I really didn’t expect to get in so I’m pretty excited

congrats!!! at least one of us from cc

what were your stats?

I got accepted yeahhhhhhhhhh i am super excited caltech is my dream college

congrats fernie!

hah my stats actually aren’t that stellar, I think I won them over with my essays. I was so frustrated when I was writing them that I kept cracking jokes all throughout my essays, so I guess it made them think I had a good bit of personality. But here are my stats anyway:

GPA: 4.0 unweighted
Rank: 3/535
Courseload: Hardest possible and I take Classes in Aerospace at my local community college
EC’s: NHS, SNHS, Stu Co., Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), Drama club, Spanish Club, and Enviornmental club
PSAT: 201 (74 in math, i don’t remeber what I got on the other parts)

yeah so like I said pretty average stats. Nothing too amazing

congrats petri and fernie!!!

Unfortunately I was rejected, but I got accepted to this cool internship in Israel, so I’m cool.

btw Petri, your stats are good :D

congrats to those of you that got in!

I guess i’m just one of 720 other rejectee’s

thanks vballer and congrats on your internship in Israel, that sounds pretty exciting (:

Just joined to say that I was accepted!

Sophomore, half Mexican, half Chinese from Hawaii.
Decent stats, focus on math and science. Caltech partners with the Keck Observatory which is based in my town, and that probably helped me (I’ve helped out there).

Congratulations to everyone who was accepted and my condolences to those who weren’t.

wow this sucks… i was rejected…
an acceptance from:
mites/ssp/sumac/sams/ea-ap

rejections:
YESS

grrrr i wanted to be able to say i was accepted to all… darn…

congrats to those accepted.

^ Ha ha me too, received acceptances from a bunch of places, but rejected from YESS. Choose MITES!

lol, YESS is the only place I got accepted, pretty ironic eh? Well I did get waitlisted for SSP so I guess that’s something, and technically I haven’t heard back from MITES yet, but I’m like 100% sure that means rejection.

well i got rejected… ),=
well maybe this wasn’t for me…Oh well, life goes on…lol
well congrats to those that did get accepted.

Congrats to all those who were accepted!
And for those of you who were not accepted, realize that Caltech needs minorities…
Sooo…
If you have strong stats and truly show a passion for math/science, you have a strong fighting chance of getting in!
I wish everyone the best of luck in their future endeavors and once again congrats to you new YESS-ers!(haha…idk what to call you guys (:

hey congrats to the few of you who actually got in!!! And congrats to the rest of you who have other amazing summer programs to attend like MITES and SSP! Would any of you mind posting your copy of the YESS acceptance letter…just curious to see what it looked like! Once again, congrats to those that made it… and to the rest of us sitting out there: I have a very sneaky suspicion that some of you who got rejection letters were maybe too overqualified for the program; they were looking for people who could benefit from the program not practically teach it! Doesn’t mean we’re out for CALTECH UNDERGRAD ADMISSIONS for 2010 though! See ya’ll in ROUND TWO next year!

@ ScienceNut - just a standard acceptance type deal.

Dear ______,

Congratulations! You have been selected for admission to the 2009 Caltech Young Engineering and Science Scholars (YESS) program. You were selected from a pool of many well-qualified students (over 750 applicants). We are excited to offer you admission and hope that you will decide to participate in the YESS program.

One of the best experiences at Caltech is the opportunity to conduct hands-on research with some of the top researchers in the world. By participating in YESS, you will get a head start to gaining research skills and exploring a career in science and engineering. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet personally with members of the Caltech Admissions staff who will answer your questions and assist you in strengthening your college applications.

Next week, you should receive a formal admissions letter along with additional program details. You will also receive a reply form where you can inform us if you intend on attending the program. We would appreciate if you let us know as soon as possible whether you plan on joining us this summer.

Best wishes and congratulations!
Sincerely,
Luz M. Rivas

However, maybe I’m biased because I did get in, but I don’t know about the overqualified application argument. It seems that any person who applies (in theory) should not think they are overqualified, and are applying because they feel they can benefit from it. Personally, this was the only summer program I applied to.

I think probably a much bigger factor than “overqualification” is the applications of non-minority students (yes, this includes Asians/Indians/other overrepresented minorities - sounds oxymoronic >_>).

hi you guys. I was wait listed. I still haven’t heard from mites but i am pretty sure i got rejected. oh well. rawr

hey I just sent my confimation thing to caltech today so I’ll definitely be at YESS 2009. (:

Hi! I was wondering if it matters who I get the recommendation letters from. I’m taking two science courses and a math course, but I have a new math teacher this semester so she does not know me very well. Thank you!
