Thank you for your application to the 2010 Caltech YESS program. We have completed our application review period and we regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a space in this year’s program.

Admission to the YESS program was significantly competitive this year. The program received a record number of over 1500 applications. Unfortunately, we do not have space to admit all qualified candidates.

You are a highly-qualified applicant and you should be proud of your accomplishments. We encourage you to continue to pursue your interest in science and engineering and to consider applying for admission to Caltech next year.

For more information on undergraduate admissions at Caltech, please visit [Caltech Undergraduate Admissions](http://admissions.caltech.edu)

We wish you the best in your future plans.

Rejection too.

My brother told me he will try again the next year.

His stats:
Male white
PSAT 172
SATII Math 770
AP Calc AB 5
AP Sat 3

It must have been extremely competitive this year. I really thought my daughter would make it this year. Her stats are:

PSAT: 216

Subject Tests
Math Level 1: 800
Chem: 800
Math Level 2: 710

The only problem is that she is probably an over-represented minority.

My daughter:

Sophomore
PSAT perfect

SAT II:
Math 2 800
Bio 800
Chem 800
Physics 800

AP:
CS 5
Physics 5
WH 5
BC Cal 5

Plenty of leadership and community service.

At age 11 scored 800 math SAT, 760 Verbal

Published author (scientific research)

Caucasian

DECLINED.

BTW, My son had better stats at her age and was accepted to all programs (very exclusive) and I feel he also would have been rejected. Oh well…

^
You can have better stats than a perfect PSAT, perfect APs, and perfect SAT IIs?

I don’t think you’ll have to worry when your daughter applies to college!

My son had similar stats to Massparent’s daughter. He is also not an um. PSAT near perfect and 5’s on all 6 ap tests. 800 on 4 SATIIs but a 770 in Bio SATII(taken as a freshman). Excellent references. AMC perfect score last year. I think it comes down to being an um. I think they should be upfront and tell applicants they make NO exceptions in regard to um. this is fine, as long as they are clear about it. They strongly encouraged us to apply despite the fact that we did not fall into this category. Oh well. Not feeling to warm about CalTech as under grad option for son. As far as YESS–Math and Science Gods need only apply.

Wow! Your children’s stats are out of this world! Congratulations! They can study whatever they want in whichever school they wish to with 100% scholarships. I am sure Cal Tech, MIT or Harvard would love to have them. Good Luck! Congratulations again!

Clubfan15

My son had 2 additional AP tests w/5’s at her age and grade and also had AP Music Theory under his belt with a 5 …oh, and AP Spanish 5. So not necessarily better stats–just more.

I don’t think it has all that much to do with not being a urm.
Me, black female, PSAT 223. Intel ISEF Finalist in Engineering. Ap’s, other EC’s yada yada
Rejected just the same lol.
I love how people get mad and then go blamin’ it on race when in reality there were over 1500 applicants for 30 spots…

What is AMC? Thanks.

I am sorry I am not very well aware of all the terminology. Just getting into this… Miss. Jayay90, what does EC refer to? Do you know AMC in the previous e-mail refers to? Thank you.

Read again. Nobody “blamed” it on race.

Since YESS is behind us now, I will sign off now and maybe return next year. I wish you and all your kids a wonderful year and wish you all the very best. Hope you / your children achieve whatever they wish to. All of you / your children are obviously very bright, determined, well-informed, rational, and driven individuals. I am sure all of you will not stop until you succeed, whatever your individual definition of success is. Have a great 2010!!!

Hey everyone, I was accepted, and got my email today, so the thing about rejections today acceptances yesterday is not accurate.

Wow…everyone’s stats are so impressive compare to mine. xD Rejected too =]

AMC is the American Math Competition. It is the first in a series of tests that qualify the taker, ultimately, for a world math competition of sorts. It is very difficult and only the top 5% of AMC scorers qualify for the next round which is the AIME.

Daddy-O, I agree, they should definitely be more up front about the URM-requirement thing. To have these kids put their all into the applications, bother the teacher to write recs and go around collecting transcripts and whatnot when they have absolutely no intention of admitting these applicants is insane. We went through this last year. Not thrilled with Cal Tech.

Congratulations! to TQSMNTASP and everyone else who got accepted.

Givings, Thank you for letting us know what AMC is.
