Caltech Yess Summer Program Questions

I am thinking about applying for the Caltech Yess Summer program and I was wondering, for those of you accepted/or not, how early did you apply, and did you have to wait for psat scores in mid-december to apply?

My son did the online application in January. He passed out the teacher rec forms at the beginning of January. Everything was postmarked and sent off by mid-February.

At that point we had the PSAT scores, so they were included.

He did not get in. We were notified by email by April 10th. The email stated that they had received 750 applications for 30 spots.

I assume it helps to be minority or female (he is not.) Our son had excellent stats – ranked 2/597, stellar PSAT scores, awesome teacher recs, etc. He did, however, apply as a sophomore, not a junior.

I don’t think he will apply again this year, even though his stats are even better. I would rather that he apply for a program he actually has a chance of being admittied to.

Good luck.

I sent my application in around February 25. PSAT scores are required. I got my acceptance letter on April 10th.

oh and givings, you should tell your son to try applying again this year, very few sophmores got in, he’ll definitely have better chances this year. And some of the students weren’t minorities, though admittedly most were.

For Petri21 - can you tell us how you liked the Caltech YESS program?

I really liked it, it was pretty awesome. I mean there was a good bit of work involved (P-sets are wonderful sleep deprivers), but most of the work revolved around things I was actually interested in and really wanted to learn about, so it was all good. Only complaint really was the lack of sleep :). Oh and You’ll get to know everyone there really well form being around eachother 24/7.
I think you’ll definitely enjoy the program if you like math and science.
If you have any specific questions I may be more of a help

Because I’m currently around the CC boards…

I’m fairly sure that everyone was a minority this past year. Can’t think of anyone who wasn’t at least partly; it’s always worth it to apply though because there’s nothing to lose.

Were Jackie and Louisa minorities? I guess they were partly. I just kind of assumed they weren’t. my bad

So you definitely have to be a minority?
Guess there’s no point in applying then… D:

Only 3 sophomores accepted for last year’s program.

The application is really easy. Doesn’t take long at all. So I think it is worth it to give it a try.
And while few sophmores are chosen every year some still are so it’s worth a try. You never know what’ll happen.

From reading all the info above, i gathered that all of the accepted students have very high PSAT or SAT scores. If you don’t mind me asking, about what range was your score? Also, what other programs have you applied to?

Thanks

I attended the program last year and I believe I got a 201 on the psat.
