Just curious...
I heard many times that the philosophy program at Calvin College reportedly is one of the very best in the country, even to the extent that students transfer to Calvin specifically to major in philosophy. Apparently, several former presidents of the American Philosophical Association either taught at, or attended Calvin for their under degrees, and it has a strong track record of admissions to top graduate programs. Yet, I never hear it mentioned on CC. Is this due to its religious affiliation? What can anyone tell me about philosophy at Calvin? Is it really that good?

I don’t know much about the Philosophy department – but my sister attended for a semester there. She is pretty secure in her faith, goes to church every Sunday, but we both attended a public school where religion was out of the classroom and so she was very put off by Calvin when she got there.

There was chapel during each day of orientation, bible verses in syllabi for completely unrelated classes, and their ‘first year seminar’ (can’t remember the actual name) is very heavily based in religion and how it affects you. She was off-put enough that she ended up transferring at the semester break. I would just make sure none of that bothers you before you continue to look into it. It’s also a fairly regional and small school, so that could be why you don’t hear it talked about too frequently here.

Calvin is a great school, and I have heard great things about both their Philosophy Department and their Seminary school.

Wouldn’t you expect it to be . . . Calvinistic?
