Hi,
I've got offers for admission from both Cambridge (UK) and McGill (Canada) for mechanical engineering (well Cambridge only gives offers for general engineering and you specialise in your 3rd year), and I have to choose between the two.

Any thoughts on which would be better? Especially in terms of career opportunities? Though discussion on factors such as cost, social life, etc would be welcomed.

I have a few friends at Cambridge. Their social life does not look too good and all their friends seem very wirey and nerdy. McGill might not have the reputation of Cambridge, but in the sciency subjects it still has a great rep, and the social life there would be great, and montreal is amazing.

I'm afraid I don't know about career opportunities or costs for either.

Umm...Cambridge. Best university in the world, well or Harvard...or a maybe...top 50 in the world? There'd always be more nerdy people in top unis, than lower ones, but these are the people who are going to be the future CEO's and leaders. And any way uni isn't really about partying for 4 years no matter what you think =P It's about education and future job prospects. You might as well jsut go off and spend ur tuition money partying otherwise.

I am considering the social life at these universities, but most importantly i just wanted to know the extent of the benefits i would recieve in studying at cambridge, ie, would spending so much money (curse the uk's intl fees!) at cambridge be worth it in the end? would i really earn so much more by having the cambridge stamp on my resume? or would i earn more, but only marginally more than if i graduated from mcgill?

I think that anywhere in the world that you go, a Cambridge degree would be regarded more highly than a McGill degree. Even in Montreal, Canada!

When it comes to costs, it's not that much of a difference as a bachelor degree at McGill is 4 years, while it's 3 years a Cambridge (not sure if it is with engineering).

My 2 cents:
I go to McGill. Cambridge is obviously a superior university, and I don't think anybody, the OP included, contests that.

I don't think it's entirely a no-brainer though. If you went to McGill, you would be able to perform at the top of the grade curve (since you would def. be smarter than the average student, although you would still have some company), attract the attention of PhD's from Harvard, Cambridge, etc. and secure graduate school opportunities. In the mean while, you would be around MUCH more attractive people, and live in the best party city in North America. So you would have a better life in the mean time, and end up at the same place IF you intend on grad. school. Honestly, some of the kids on this site will spend their whole lives on a hedonic treadmill, waiting for moments that never come.

I would go to Cambridge; think it this way, if you dont like it, its just 3 years, and as a payback you have the reputation of having studied in the best university in the world (according to me!!!!) hehe...

However, i would never say that McGill, is a bad university, in fact im planning to apply there, GO MCGILL!!

All Cambridge first degrees in engineering are MEng's normally requiring 4 years of undergraduate studies.

Cambridge...definitely...reputation's over McGill in the world, but doesn't it also depend on where you're planning to work? If you're going to do grad school, Cambridge's definitely the better choice...

Give a thought to what wutangfinancial says, its important, you cannot say later that i wasn't aware of this important fact. Its true.

Cambridge is one of the most selective schools, if you make the best of the opportunities available there, you will surely enjoy cambridge much more,

Its a Big Fish smaller pond thing... as wutangfinancial says if you maintain your academics and keep things flawless...

So if you can afford cambridge, there is little point in going to McGill.
In the worst case you to McGill and slack(happens to quite a number of high achievers, university life changes many people), you will be stranded at that place, however, if the same thing happens at cambridge, you will still be a cambridge educated.
