Campbell Biology/ USABO

I’m in 8th grade going to freshman next year and Im trying to read through Campbell biology 9th edition to prepare for USABO. And I know this is an AP textbook. This is my first time trying to read through a textbook AND MY PROGRESS IS VERY SLOW. On good days I may go through 10-20 pages but on bad days it takes me like 1 hour to go through 4 pages. In addition to that sometimes one concept would fill up a whole page of notes. Can you guys help me on strategies on how to efficiently and effectively read this huge book?

This is m first time reading a COLLEGE LEVEL TEXTBOOK

Hey. I’m a sophomore, and I qualified for semifinals last year. Since Campbell is a pretty large book (1700), I suggest you make a liberal schedule that allows you to finish the book before February (with 1 chapter a day, you can finish the book in 2 months). Second: you don’t really need to take notes the first time thru. The open doesn’t go into a level of detail that warrants notes. If you really need notes, take them when you go through the book the 2nd time to refresh your memory. Just read the book, do the chapter reviews, MEMORIZE DIAGRAMS, and review the chapter when you finish it. Lastly, don’t linger too long on one topic; you can look at Bozeman science videos or Campbell quizlets online to help grasp a concept (you still have to read, though). Good luck!

Hello, I am also interested in this question. I am an 8th grader, like you, trying to read to Campbell’s. I started reading like 3 days ago and I am not even finished with Unit one(I am going through the 10th edition, units maybe different). So, I am pretty interested in any replies to this thread.

thanks for the advice

Does anyone want to start a study guide together on google docs? We can form a google group

You should be able to go through the entire book in about two months even while taking notes. I suggest that you read through the book the first time just to get acquainted with the material then go back and take notes in the chapters where you are least comfortable.

Sure.
