campus aesthetics?

Hey everyone. I am considering going to northwestern- weinberg- great school with solid academics and prestige, but a huge factor for me is the beauty of the campus- the environment, the architecture, the facilities, the libraries!

i was awe-struck by cornell's gorgeous campus and JHU's paedbody (spelling?) library, as well as an aesthetically pleasing campus, and UChicago has some of the most remarkable architecture i've seen.

I just wanted people's opinions on the appeal of the campus beauty at northwestern; i'll make a visit sometime later this month maybe, but others' takes would be nice...

Well, nothing can really compare to Cornell's gorges.

I'm not particularly fond of Northwestern's buildings, but being right on the lake is pretty awesome.

The architecture is a nice blend of modern and gothic antique. It does, however, strike me as a little cold and bland at times.

Northwestern is not as fine of an example of one single style as Chicago or Stanford are -- Northwestern has more of a blend of styles and shows a number of different types. There is not much in the way of utilitarian/Soviet-esque 1970's waste...even the Northwestern buildings built around then look nice.

It's beautifully wooded and the lakefront aesthetic is very nice. Some of the walkways and sitting areas tucked here and there are spectacular. Views of the Deering Library and University Hall anchor a lot of locations and are also beautiful. The connection to downtown Evanston is a great aspect too. Personally I think the overall physical impression at Northwestern is better than Chicago by a wide margin and better than Stanford by a bit, even if it's not the architectural example that those places are.

What I think Northwestern does not have is great coherence/blending of styles, or a great layout of buildings. In a lot of buildings you feel like you're always near a parking lot.
