Campus/comparison to other FL schools?

Hi, I'm applying to FSU, and am wondering what the campus is like? How big, what there is to do, is it neatly kept, etc. I've seen UCF and UF so if you can compare it to that, that would be useful! Also, how does the school compare overall to UF? I'm thinking about majoring in Zoology or Pre-Vet. Any news on these departments/what the classes are like? Thanks a lot!

You can find a list of all available majors at fsu here:[Academic Program Guide, Majors and Academic Maps | fsu.edu](http://www.academic-guide.fsu.edu/)

However there is no zoology or pre-vet program.

As for the campus, its really nice. Very open like UF’s campus, while still being compact. Its about a 15 minute walk from one side to the other, its really beautiful, nice trees. I feel that it is “cleaner” than UF’s campus, plus there isn’t all that moss and stuff growing on the buildings. It’s not as modern as UCF, however the buildings are all pretty recently renovated and have nice interiors while maintaing that classic “college” exterior. I love campus, you can spend your days off there sometimes, just reading on Landis green or enjoying a nice walk and seeing the wildlife (squirrels will literally walk right over your feet sometimes).

I’ve been to all the other schools and I think Florida State’s campus is the best in the state. It has rolling hills, huge old oak trees and nice buildings. Take College Avenue from Monroe Street west to the main entrance…quite a view.

mannymix03, you’re the only person I know that doesn’t like the Spanish moss on UF’s campus.

Thanks for the input! Sounds really nice :)

[About the College UF|College of Veterinary Medicine](College aims to enhance recruitment efforts through mentoring program » College of Veterinary Medicine » University of Florida)

“The UF College of Veterinary Medicine is the state’s only veterinary college.”

If you are thinking pre-vet, the choice is pretty obvious.

Yeah, but I don’t know if I’ll get into UF…find out soon. FSU has pre-vet, so I could transfer.

i hope this works. tyring to link you to an older post

FSU is where I’m going since UF rejected me. Screw UF and their admissions process. FSU is a great school considering that its located at the capital, Tallahassee. The class sizes are smaller making the professors accessible.

@ sohini
That’s the spirit your positive attitude is admirable. I honestly think FSU is much better than UF (been accepted to both, but payed my deposit for FSU). Why I think FSU is better than UF
-smaller class sizes and if in honors even smaller. Intro econ at UF can have a 1000 students and many courses people are forced to take online.
-People are really nice
-Surrounding area and population is great - the people are really nice and i like the small town feeling of Tallahassee. When I asked someone on the sidewalk where the Science Museum was they did not just tell me they actually walked with me to show me where it was. I can tell you with utmost certainty that this would never occur in Miami.
-The staff are not arrogant and they try to help you instead of considering your call an inconvenience. When i wanted to change my major from biology to biomathematics i was simply transferred to another person and my major was changed in roughly 30 seconds. Also, I’m annoyed by the UF Harvard of the South attitude when they are not anything close to Harvard. When i got the admission letter online from UF they gave this impression that it is like this huge honor to be accepted by them and I should feel forever grateful.
-The people in FSU are much more approachable where is in UF much of the student body seems quite aloof. In UF when I tried to ask a few students what they thought of the university they simply seemed annoyed by the question and tried to answer the question as quickly as possible and move off on their merry way. In FSU when I asked similar questions on the university they seemed glad to help me and they gave me more detailed opinions on their thoughts on the university.
-I like the look of FSU buildings better. Old brick > New brick.
-The campus is smaller so easier to get around by bike
-Better dorms - FSU actually has air conditioning
-FSU is almost equivalent academically to UF in almost all areas except for engineering.

Sohini,

Sorry to hear you didn’t get into UF. I had that same “screw UF admissions” attitude as you did last year, but going to FSU has really been great for me, and I actually consider that rejection letter a blessing in disguise. Your post comes off as simply rationalizing to me, but there’s a number of reasons why FSU > UF to me.

Tallahassee > Gainesville. I went to Gainesville for the FSU v. UF football and basketball games this year and hated that city. Traffic is terrible and if it didn’t have UF, it would basically be Lake City. (A city of nothing at the intersection of I75 and I10). Tallahassee is the home of 2 major universities (FSU and FAMU), is the capital of Florida, and home to the largest community college in the state (TCC).

Our campus is better than theirs. Perhaps this is an opinion, but many Florida students have even admitted that our campus is nicer. It’s compact, not spread out, but still has that big time college campus feel. Read the other thread for more details.

UF may be ranked higher, but FSU is vastly underrated by US News. I expect that ranking will improve under the leadership of Barron and with the tuition increases. There’s more to a college than rankings though, and while UF may have us there, we have them in a lot of other things which many could argue are more important.

As for class sizes, we’re just like every other state college. You will have some small classes, but the large lecture halls will have 100+ people.

I’m still torn between FSU and USF. I want to get into biomedical engineering and I heard that USF’s engineering program was top notch. Do you guys have any idea about how FSU’s engineering program is?

UCF’s engineering program is the 2nd best in the state ranked 80th in the country. FSU is a close 3rd ranked 92, but the most unappealing part of our engineering program is that it is shared with FAMU, so not all of your classes will be on campus at FSU. I don’t know where USF is ranked for engineering, but I’ve never really liked that school. Bad campus and it is either a commuter school for Tampa’s students or the last respectable safety for anyone else.

Post #10 is a great post. That pretty much sums up all of my reasons. I got into UF, but I wouldn’t ever consider going there unless for some reason I needed to move in with my brother in Gainesville.

Some 80% of the faculty and students at the e-school are from Florida State. It is located in [Innovation Park](http://www.innovation-park.com/) with the [Mag Lab](http://www.magnet.fsu.edu/).

See: [FAMU-FSU College of Engineering](http://www.eng.fsu.edu/)

By the way, there is a bus to the engineering campus that runs pretty constantly, i think its at 10 and 50 on the hour.

Oh, and to this poster:
“-The people in FSU are much more approachable where is in UF much of the student body seems quite aloof. In UF when I tried to ask a few students what they thought of the university they simply seemed annoyed by the question and tried to answer the question as quickly as possible and move off on their merry way.
Thank you, I hope it was me that you talked to. Friday was preview and the campus was filled with people asking questions and going on tours. A lot of people seem shy to ask questions to students but everyone I know is more than willing to answer any questions you have. I had a parent ask me about class sizes, so I offered to take her daughter into my Brain & Behavior class so she could see the class sizes, then I gave her a tour of my (messy) dorm and answered any questions she had. FSU students love their school

As far as engineering, both FSU and USF do have excellent programs (including biomedical engineering concentration.) UF’s engineering college is more established and widely recognized, but UF isn’t an option if you’re denied admission. Both USF’s and FSU’s engineering schools are fully ready to offer incoming freshmen a challenging workout. If I were beginning engineering studies at either school, I wouldn’t be so concerned about the schools’ rankings as much as I would be concerned about getting through the first semester of really hard coursework–including calculus, chemistry and all the other related courses that will weed out many hopeful engineering students.

In my opinion, USF has a nice campus–so does FSU. USF’s new student union is much nicer than FSU’s. Some of USF’s dorms are nicer than some of FSU’s. FSU has a football stadium on campus, USF uses an NFL stadium off campus. Both campuses are safe and have their own police depts.–however one could wander off campus a few blocks at night at either FSU or USF and get into trouble if not careful.

About 5200 USF students live on campus, about 15,000 USF students live in private apartments and housing by the campus–the balance of USF students commute.

Sohini, If you haven’t already, try to visit each campus to help in your decision making–you can’t go wrong with either school.

(just for the record, Miami-Dade College with about 170,000 students–about the same # as the whole population of Tallahassee–has to be the largest community college in Florida, not Tallahassee Community College.)

Also, I have another question…is it easy to ride bikes to the grocery stores and other stores that are not within walking distance of campus? and, are there some nice places TO ride bikes? I like to cycle xD

Sure, it is easy. The problem is getting your groceries back to the dorm on a bike. Walking is also very workable to the store, but again the issue becomes getting your frozen food back on campus before it thaws.

Both daughters soon learned that a timely ride to the store, commonly shared between several floormates, offers a solid solution.

As to serious cycling Tallahassee is known for hilly and gorgeous canopy roads that just beg for cyclists. You can take some of these roads out to the rural areas, find some country restaurant for a meal then cruise back into town. [Bradley’s Country Store](http://www.bradleyscountrystore.com/) on Centerville Road is one popular cycling destination.

Wow! Awesome. Thanks for the info. I live in Germany (attending an American school on a military base), and I didn’t get the chance to visit FSU this past summer :frowning: I only got to see UF and UCF. Thank you very much for your informative answers! :)

Do you know anything about the Honors Program? I’m going to petition…(I have a 28 ACT and 1890 SAT, am in top 10% of class and have over a 3.9 FSU GPA)…do you have any idea how many petitioners actually get in? Thanks so much!
