Campus Dorm or Apartment Studio $?

I'm applying to NYU for Fall 2013, and I'm just curious as to what's a better way of living in NYC, pay 15k for the dorms? or is it possible to find a cheaper place on campus? and how big are the dorms anyway? are they worth spending all that money or would I be better off with a studio in the city?

I have a feeling you’ll have to move out to Brooklyn or LES if you want your single person studio to be cheaper than NYU dorms. You will not find anything “on campus.” You may be able to find something near St. Mark’s if you have other people to live with. You should live in the dorms in your freshman year anyway, and after you finish your freshman year, you will have a much better idea of dorms and rent in the city.

I second what the person above me said.

On top of that, freshmen dorms are a great way to get to know people and create a social circle. You dont want to be communting back to an apartment after class, expecially when everyone else is living together. Talk about lonely!

Well I won’t be a freshman, i’ll be transfering, I figured if I have an associates degree and IT skills, I might be able to find a job out there, but I’m down to listen to any advice you can give me. I really don’t want to have to go on financial aid, but If I can’t find a job, I’ll probably just live in the dorms. By the way, I know I made this about dorms/apartments, but theres a few other things on my mind. How much does the average person make to be able to live in Manhatten? If I have an associates, would I have a shot at making it in the city? or should I just look for places outside no matter what? I’d love to live in the dorms, but I’d prefer my privacy, I’ve thrown a lot of years away due to excessibe partying, and I don’t want to go down that road anymore, it’s really set me back, and if the dorms are the same as they are where I live, I’ll probably find myself getting back into that scene. Let me know what you think.

If you want to live by yourself, you won’t be living in Manhattan. Just go on craigslist or something to check rent in various areas of the city. As far as I know, there are not very many studios around here, so you’ll have to find roommates or sublet. NYU (non-freshmen, non-Gramercy) dorms have almost zero social life so don’t worry about partying your life away.

Are the dorms good sized dorm rooms? or are they really small? are they worth 15k a year?

Really depends on the dorm and room type. There’s an NYU Housing Wiki and NYU Local (or Washington Square News?) has done a series about dorms. I am personally paying under 10k/year for my dorm room and while it is small, it is new and very nice.

Ohh and heres another question, how much do campus jobs pay an hour, or what is the average wage for somebody with an AAS degree in NYC? it’s about 9 an hour where I live, so I would hope it’s more out there or i’m probably going to be in debt from school for years lol :)

Look, it’s NYC. People with Bachelor’s work retail for minimum wage. If your job will be your only source of income, you’ll have to live very far out. Campus jobs, as far as I know, pay very close to minimum wage. Highest I’ve seen is $12/hour, usually it’s $8-10/hour.

We found that three sharing a two-bedroom apt (one in LR) in East Village cost about the same as a Third North space in a suite; each had a whole “room” so to speak.

Wait the dorms are only 10k? is that per semester or year? Because I read that they were 15k, I saw some youtube videos Gramercy green hall looks legit, I’d stay there any day.

You ain’t getting into Gramercy as a transfer. Never. You’ll be stuck in Lafayette for your first year at NYU, and this is a fact.

Lullinatalk is correct. Transfers seem to all get Laf, which is pretty far from classes. The rooms there are all apartments, and are nice, but it’s unlikely you will have your own room. Low cost doubles are around $11000 per year, if I remember correctly.

meh it works, it’ll probably be $12000 by the time I get there in fall 2013. Is there anything else you can tell me about dorm life at NYU, what to expect, and what to prepare for? I’ve never lived in a dorm before.

Dorm life at NYU = apartment life anywhere else

There’s barely any contact with other residents unless you already know them with the possible exception of Gramercy and/or Palladium. There’s a bathroom and a kitchen in your room. The windows only open 2 inches.

Meh, it is what it is. I have a lot of questions so here’s a few on my mind. Does the average student last the entire semester on the meal plan or are they bad meal plans? and I’ll be lucky if you can answer this one: What are the study areas like at the clive davis institute of recorded music? Ohh and last one: My payment requirements say I need like 2000 dollars for something, for fees, is that the meal plan or is that something else?

You will mostly not require a meal plan because you have a kitchen. If you live in Laf, all the dining halls will be too far away from you (like you have to take the NYU bus or the subway to get to NYU cafeterias). I do not know about the study areas in Tisch. I don’t know about the $2000, but you don’t get charged for a meal plan unless you sign up for one online or live in a traditional style dorm (Brittany Hall for upperclassmen).

Tisch requires close to $2000 in registration and departmental fees in addition to tuition. A meal plan is around an additional $2000 a semester and is only worth it if you eat almost every meal at an NYU dining hall.

You’ll probably have to wander quite a bit away from campus to find something that’s nice and cheap. And as someone else said, dorm life here is basically like living in an apartment. You only interact with people if you want to/make extra effort to.
