Campus Events/School Spirit

Hi -

I was wondering what kinds of social events are held on campus? Are there activites that bring the students together outside academics?

I think (hope!) students get free admission to the hockey games. I went to one last week and it was awesome (even though NE lost).

Yeah, sporting events are free. Student groups are aaaaaaaaaalways having events throughout campus (and eager for high attendance!). There are also lots of concerts in AfterHours. We’re a pretty active campus I’d say. Northeastern’s a big school, but it’s pretty easy to find your niche.

… school spirit? What’s that?

There are tons of campus events where you can meet people and get involved. There’s a club for everything, there are tons intramurals, there are all sorts of social events, there are speakers that come to Blackman Auditorium, authors that speak at the library… pretty much endless list. Then there are the random little events like Take a Coffee break hosted by the spiritual center during finals where you just stop in, take free donuts and muffins and coffee and then leave. Campus is really active and there are always things to do. And then there’s a whole city to run around in.

Not many people are into the traditional school spirit deal, but the NU crowd at hockey games is known for being really enthusiastic and loud. My roommate goes to every.single.hockey game (I’ve been to like 3 ever) and there’s definitely a good amount of people who are regulars at hockey games. Otherwise, no one pays much attention.

There are a bunch of small things that are nifty to go to (and get free food).

As Emily said, northeastern isn’t a school spirit type of school… I have yet to meet anyone that will chant NORTHEASTERN on the street randomly because of crazy school spirit (trust me, half my friends from home go to University of Florida, so yes I have seen this often). The exception is the hockey games. They can get a little crazy, but they don’t take over the school or anything if you’re not into it (I’m not).

Do Northeastern University students get free admission/ discounted tickets to events/sports around Boston like Patriots/Red Sox Games, museums, and concerts and stuff?

Oh and do you think clubs and school community and things suffer at Northeastern because of the surrounding city?

MFA is free admission. Otherwise, not really. Giving student discounts in this city basically means giving discounts to the majority of the population. I do get a student discount at my yoga studio, and bruins have “student nights”… otherwise nothing comes to mind.

No. NEU campus is like any other college campus. It just happens to be in the city. Clubs have plenty of space to meet. People get involved in student organizations and spend time lounging around ABP and Panera. They wake up hung over on a saturday and drag themselves in their pajamas to the dining hall. Students live in dorms and do ridiculous things with their floormates. On the first warm day of the year, kids take over the greenspace to play frisbee or lounge with their friends while wearing shorts and daydresses. During midterms and finals, people whine their way through all-nighters and marathon library sessions. Students do student-y things regardless of what surrounds their campus.

Aw man. :frowning: But thanks for all the info! It’s nice to know students still do campus-y things even when surrounded by city distractions. Man, I love this place. : )

as another note, although most places don’t offer discounted tickets, many times RA’s will put on events and offer discounted tickets to their residents. I know right now in my dorm we have an event with 10 dollar tickets to blue man group, which is probably over 50 dollars normally if i had to guess. Also, a lot of times there will be events with free movie tickets, and stuff like that.

Well as for movie tickets, you can always buy AMC tickets for $6. Considering its like 11 to 13 dollars at the theater, its crazy awesome.

Also at AMC, tickets are $6 if you go to an AM showing on Saturday or Sunday :)
