Campus issues for first-year Engineer

Ok, so what I've gathered from these other posts is that the best campus to live on for an engineering student is Busch. But do you believe it would be too difficult to live on College Ave? I'm only wondering because although I want to maintain my grades and have a great gpa, I also like to party. I don't drink that much [mainly just get a buzz] so I don't think my partying willmess up my grades or anything. Im' wondering about all this because I went to Rutgers day yesterday, and the Busch Campus was like dead around 7pm, while there were many people with their friends on College Ave. Also, I overheard a girl on the bus who said to her friend "The only people who say they hate Rutgers are the ones that don't live on College Ave." Ugh I'm very confused. And sorry for the long post!

College Ave is without a doubt the party capital of Rutgers. That’s were all of partying is at. For that reason, it’s louder and has much more excitement than Busch, for instance. The fun comes at the expense of quiet study time. There’s always something going on at the avenue on college.

The thing about Busch is that it’s just a campus, whereas College Ave is a city. Busch is dorms and classrooms, and a bunch of dedicated (mostly) kids. There aren’t any houses on Busch, and therefore - no frat parties. That said, if you want to get a buzz going, people always drink in their rooms and have private parties on Busch. If you want to frat it up, you would need to take a bus to College Ave, which becomes tedious after a while.

I live on Busch, so I might be a bit biased here, but I think it offers the best of both worlds. It’s pretty much always calm, so it’s easy to stay focused, plus you’re surrounded by smart kids and that rubs off on you. For the times you just want to sip on a beer with a small group of friends you could do so in your dorm. When you are in the mood to party the night away, you could take the ‘party bus’ to College Ave.

I guess that’s not too bad. And to get into a frat party at Rutgers is it true you need to have like 3 girls for every guy? Because whenever I go to parties at Temple they just ask for $5 and anyone can go.

Yes, you almost always need a ‘ratio’ of 3 girls for every 1 guy to get into a frat party. It’s not really a rule, per se, but most frats ask for a 3:1. Some ask for insane rations though - I’ve been told to bring 8 girls once.

Often times you will be asked to have a ratio AND drop $5. In fact, more often than not this is the case. There’s a bright side though. If you are liked by the brothers you will eventually befriend them, and sometimes they will let you get in for free/low ratio.

Just so you know, though. The parties at Rutgers are heavily overrated. I too was excited about the parties at first, but they get boring real fast. Expect crowded basements, sweaty people, and no air to breath. Also, you will probably not be served much alcohol, and what you will be served is mainly juice (read: pregame before you go to a party).

jpstevens it’s interesting to see that the parties on College Ave haven’t changed much in 20 years.
