Campus Jobs

should i be applying on the career center or is it better summitted in person?

can you guys recommend any good ones?
a job for someone that can even write me recommendation someday, or just one easy way to make $ between classes..so laid back it is basically like gettting paid to do your own HW?

Friends of mine that work in the library usually just do their hw.

At my college we apply for jobs directly at the department or office we want to work for. Application procedures vary by employer, but most of them ask us to complete a relatively simple form and then get back to us later. A few jobs that carry a larger amount of responsibility (e.g. tour guides) require interviews and references as well. Typical jobs at my college include:

Dining hall (checking, serving, food prep, dishroom), library (front desk, shelving), gym (life guards, managing equipment for teams etc), help desk (help with computer problems), tour guides, office assistants, tutors, teaching assistants, hall advisors (= resident assistants)...

Some of them might look good on a resume, but the majority is just cheap labor for the college and a convenient job for you. Convenient because you can re-schedule your hours every semester to fit around your classes and you don't have to work during breaks, which may not be so easily possible with an off-campus job. Of course any employer could write you a recommendation about how reliable you are, but the actual work you did may not be significant to your future career goals at all. Some jobs pay you for doing your homework (e.g. library front desk) while others require hard work (e.g. dining hall dishroom).

Life guarding? Verrryyy laid back. Unless somebody is drowning.

If your college has a student employment center or website, check out the positions (work-study, non-work-study) that are available on campus.
