Hey guys im new to the forums but seeing as I plan on applying to schools next fall I have a couple questions to those that have some knowledge on RPI

How is campus life at this schools. Is this a commuter school because at a commuter school i have heard the weekends are dead on the campus. Are there usually events going on and stuff to do if i plan on dorming there.

How are the people. I say this just because of what many people say about these schools but are the guys at these places really anti social and stay in their dorms playing video games? And though there are obviously more guys than girls, is it that bad or is there a decent amount.

Lastly if a social, athletic guy wants to have a good time and not have to go knocking on peoples dorm rooms to hang out, is this likely?

I know im making this school sound bad but im just basing my thoughts on reviews i have previously heard. The reason for me looking into this school is for their top notch engineering programs and division 3 athletics.

I was definitely worried about these things too before coming to RPI… and I will say that a lot of what you’ve heard about kids being awkward/antisocial is absolutely true for a good number of students here. HOWEVER, if you are are an athletic guy, you want to be social, you want to find girls, you can definitely still have a great time here. It’s not hard to have a great social life if you look for it. If you’re a guy, you’ll have a pretty hard time having the social life you want if you’re not greek or not on a sports team. But if you are, you’ll find a group of guys similar to you, and you’ll have no problem finding things to do and people to hang out with. The gender ratio also isn’t that bad for the social (especially athletic) guys. (Coming from a girl’s perspective, though :P)

I think it makes a huge difference whether or not you decide to go Greek (for guys). There are 30 something fraternities, so it shouldn’t be hard to find at least one that fits right for you. (If you play a sport, you’ll want to join the frat that’s kind of affiliated with that sport) But basically if you’re Greek, there’s plenty to do all the time, plenty of people to hang out with, events and fun things going on on a regular basis, and you’ll meet girls pretty easily. If you’re into partying there’s plenty of that too if you’re Greek.

Oh, and I don’t know why you heard it’s a commuter school… almost everyone I know here is from out of state. I think I know one person who lives nearby. Plus freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus.
