i was wondering how much school spirit the school has. How involved are the students there? For example, how many people are involved in clubs and sporting events? Also, what kind of clubs do they have? How easy is it so switch majors? I know they're random questions, but i really need answers. Thanks for your time!!

well, NYU doesn't really have a campus; it's just in the middle of a really cool city. and also, it's more of an artsy school rather than an athletic one, so there won't be too many big, loud, spirited sporting events. but i heard there was free food if you show up to the swim meets, or something like that... for switching majors, i would say it depends. you apply to different schools within NYU on the application, so may have to reapply if the major you want to switch to a major within a different school.

***random question: elaine23, is your birthday also on Feb. 3rd? haha, i'm just really curious because i've never known of anyone with the same birthday as me.

honestly, there's not too much school spirit... or atleast it wanes out after the welcome week. But i don't think ANY school is as much fun as its prospectus seem to suggest. I mean, i always thought about cornell as a fun place, good scenary and partying. But i met some students who had been there over the summer, or were transfers and they gave a very gloomy look to how i had imagined cornell would've been.....
Also, I think its a good thing too. If you're a bio major or something like that, well u'll be studying most of the day...and will probably not be worried about...well distractions.... I missed out on all the major events just because i didn't have time... over the years, nyu has become very active.... expect to see a big demonstration in the park every now and then....
if u're CAS, u don't have to declare ur major until the end of ur sophomore year. dunno abt other schools.... but a lot of majors have tons of requirements, so u need to start exploring the different courses as soon as u start. I was confused b/w Middle Eastern studies and Bio, and i took both a course from both depts. in the first semester... cleared up on what i wanted to do!

No offense to any die hard NYU'ers, but I've heard that student life is pretty bad. Either you know the right people or you don't. There's not a lot of mixing, people do their own thing and don't tend to make new friends. It's 'the city' you know, everyone's caught up in their own world.

But of course the rumor mill always exaggerates things.

I agree, there isn't much school spirit in terms of sports. We're a division III school, so it's nothing like those big NCAA schools. But most people know this, so people who come here usually appreciate the fact there aren't too many jocks or crazy fans. But there are a lot of clubs you can join. Most people are involved in either one or two. You can get involved in just about anything--from academic to just for fun (Milk and Cookies Club is the best).

As for switching majors, you don't finally declare your major till sophomore year. Once you declare it, I don't think you're allowed to change. But before that, do whatever you want. Most people change what they want to do once or twice. But internal transfers between schools are more difficult, and there's no guarantee you'll get in.

I don't know about bad student life. People come to NYU for the city. If they wanted a campus, they'd go to a school with one. If you don't go out and make new friends, no one is going to come to you. It all depends what you want out of school, and there are plenty of places to meet new people. I hate using a cliche, but you get out of college what you put in.

Thanks everybody for taking the time to reply!! Thanks very very much

sorry...my birthday is on jan. 23...not feb.3. but i have confidence in you...you're bound to find someone w/ the same birthday as you....someday
