Campus Life

Anyone want to fill me in on the social scene at SusquehannaU?

Good question as I would be interested in this as well. Namely, how much if any drinking in the dorms, vs frats, vs off campus? Pot use?

What do students do for fun? Do they stay on campus on weekends?

It would be good if a current student or recent alum could respond on this.

I have read many guides and have visited the campus for a day, so I'll answer what I can.

I have not heard of a hard line ban on alcohol such as at Gordon, Wheaton (IL), or BYU.

SU's literature says 2/3 of the student body does community service. One third participate in varsity sports. The literature says the schools runs bus trips to NYC and Philadelphia, and brings in concerts, etc. One quarter are Greek. The surrounding area looks bleak for entertainment IMO.

It seems to me that the SU administration has gone to extraordinary lengths to set up a nice environment for the students, namely the student center w/ pool tables, movies, etc. and the recreation center (gym) - you won't find one any better. The dorms are very nice and the Honors dorm is incredible.

Apparently some faculty live in the Honors dorm as well. So I would imagine its pretty straight-laced, mature life there.

All the buildings are new or refurbished since the late 80s, most in the last 5 years. The grounds and buildings are impeccably maintained. The insides of the buildings are spic & span clean, shiny, and polished. I don't see evidence of the students defacing the property, etc.

One thing I noticed was that all the parking lots around campus were quite full. I wonder if most students have cars, and whether they are leaving campus on weekends.

Twelve miles away is Bucknell with a similarly lavish campus, but it seems to have out-of-control drinking problems among the student body. Lewisburg would seem to be an ideal LAC college town, but apparently the town residents aren't getting along w/ the drunken rowdies from BU.

Back to your original question, you could start here:

Hopefully an SU student or alum can post here.

Apparently there are no "Honors" dorms. What I was referring to is Seibert Hall, which "houses 82 upperclass men and women. These students are either involved in volunteer projects or are international students. "

The living area is amazing.

Susquehanna sounds like a great fit for my youngest daughter. In reading the comments at studentsreview.com, there is so much that's positive, "that special feeling" kind of stuff. Wish some current SU students hung out here to give us specifics as to what they like and dislike about SU. Anyone???

I'm an SU grad (class of 2000). Things have changed a good bit it seems already since I was there. Parking was a problem when I was there and I'm not sure if anything's been done about that. A lot of students had cars and many students left campus on the weekends to visit boyfriends/girlfriends at other schools or visit family. It always felt like there wasn't a lot to do there when I was there, but they've built a new on-campus facility Trax to try to combat the boredom/drinking problem. If anyone is interested I can post more later.

Very interested in hearing more. My daughter is storngly contemplating SU and any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
G

I am currently attending the school, though I have had thoughts of leaving. These may have been for personal reasons though, such as distance (I live in CT). The school has a pretty campus and a small, close-knit community - basically everyone knows a lot about what's going on with one another. This can be bad or good, depending on what you're looking for. One positive side of the school's small size are the small sized classes. I have not been in a class of more than 20 people, and they are usually much less than that. Dorms are average, not palaces, but they are decent to live in. The school is working on a new dormitory this summer that will house suites, which is promised to be very nice - most likely not open to freshman, though. There is one warning, especially if you live in Smith - you may be placed in a forced triple (meaning three people to a room that is meant to accomadate two). I lived in one my freshman year the whole way through, which definitely had its ups and downs. You do get offered the chance to de-triple throughout the fall semester. We got our offer very early in the semester, which was difficult because we hardly knew eachother yet - hence we decided to stay living together. I don't like the fact that they still have this happening - even if you get the chance to de-triple, you still have to potentially hurt someone's feelings if they are the one that is agreed upon to move out.
The area is very rural, so if you are from a city area this could be a bit of a culture shock - or a relief, depending on your preference. There is a nearby mall though, and plenty of common restaurants like Friendlys and Applebees. And BJ's Steakhouse is a great local restaurant that you can't miss out on when you visit SU. we are about 15-20 minutes away from Bucknell, which can be nice if you have friends going there.
As for academics, I've never heard anything bad about any of the majors, and have friends majoring many of the different subjects offered here. All are very good, though the school is commonly known for its business school and the music program.
Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

kitkat,

Thanks for your thoughts. My daughter decided to attend SU this fall and is very excited about being there in less than a month. She's interested in Hassinger as her dorm, even though most rooms are a bit small. Also, our last visit there found that the common/lounge rooms are quite sparse. It was a bit of a let down. Overall, she's very happy with her choice, right now. Hopefully she'll be just as happy with SU in a year.
