Any current students who can fill me in on campus life? Does it have a campus feel to it even though it’s in a large city? Also, what is it like having students constantly leaving for co-op…is there still a sense of community?
I am a current freshman. Campus life is pretty great - there is definitely a campus feel, WE HAVE A CAMPUS (unlike BU, BU has a sidewalk). The MFA to Symphony is Northeastern territory.
Campus is active just about always. On weekdays you will find the library, student center, study rooms, common areas of academic buildings, and dinning halls all pretty full - usually I run into someone I know at the library or dinning hall, which is nice. Then after 6 o’clock classes are done and clubs start meeting, which keeps the campus pretty active until like 9oclock. The sense of community is really strong - just last night was the championship Beanpot hockey game. It was very well attended by NU students, NU students on Co-op, NU staff/faculty, and NU alumni. Northeastern students are easy to spot, even though there are 5+ college on Huntington avenue. Berklee College of Music and MassArt feature hipster students, MCPHS features students who got a 600 TOTAL CR+M on their SAT and Wentworth features exclusively guys who all wish they went to Northeastern.
The co-op aspect is really cool, and actually brings together the community. What I mean is that you are able to ask people in your major about their co-op experience, and see if it is a co-op you would be interested in. Although you can co-op just about anywhere in the world, I see a lot of people staying in Boston because of the community Northeastern is.
Boston will be your playground. By no means to people "have"to stay on campus on the weekends/nights, and many don’t. But I bet you a medium hot coffee from Dunkin that you will run into at least 3 northeastern students at the hot spots in Boston. E branch of the Green Line, Inbound on the Orange, the Pru, clubs, bars around campus, Logan airport, or even on other campuses. It’s cool going to (sneaking into) a Harvahd party and seeing a few Northeastern students.
Thanks so much!! This helped A LOT. Also, I was wondering if co-ops are paid?
Yes, almost all co-ops are paid. The exceptions are generally in non-profit or entertainment work. In some fields like CS and engineering, co-ops can be very well paid. Also, remember that you don’t pay tuition while on co-op.
Can you live in the dorm while on co-op?
@nanotechnology oh wow I didn’t even consider the fact that you wouldn’t pay tuition while on co-op because the tuition was definitely a concern when comparing to other schools
@redpoodles I’m pretty sure you can stay in the dorms unless your co-op is further away then it doesn’t make sense
You are still considered a full-time student while on co-op. This means you have all the regular benefits of being a student: staying in the dorms, being in clubs and sports, access to the gym and all other campus facilities. And if you sign up to live in the dorms and then get a co-op outside of the Boston area, you can get your dorm deposit back.
