im an upcoming senior in high school and pretty sure i'm going to apply ED to W&M. I was wondering though, what's the campus life like at w&m?
for example, what are the majority of people like?
how often are there parties/what are they like?
what's there to do for fun outside of classes?
what kind of music/tv are people into?
how much work does one generally have to do outside of class?

if these are too hard to generalize in an answer, it'd be cool if you could just tell me a little bit about what you/your campus life is like and how much homework you have to do, etc.

Certainly hope some current students reply to this thread but here’s some general information.

W&M students are very diverse in their backgrounds and perspectives and they bring their many interests and talents to campus life which is reflected in the over 400 student-run organizations that exist on campus. Our students tend to be work-hard, play-hard. They are engaged in their studies but equally engaged in the social scene on campus.

Campus parties take varying forms from frat parties to cultural festivals and I’ll leave it to current students to discuss those in more depth.

This is not a suitcase campus at all and most students are here on the weekends and 75% or so live on campus all four years. W&M has a 95% retention rate (95% of freshmen return for their sophomore year) so students are certainly enjoying their overall expereince.

there is obviously a variety of people at W&M… 2/3 are from Virginia, and 1/3 are from out of state. I think roughly half the instate students are from northern va. The students are very smart and generally academically motivated.

well… there are generally frat parties every friday and saturday. These parties are generally not exclusive, and all are welcome. There are also house parties, and some people have parties in their dorms. Student organizations are also known to have parties at times. Sunday is mug night, which is very popular with the 21+ crowd.

participate in clubs. check out CW. go to the outlets. go to the movies. play IM sports. throw a frisbee with friends. play on your computer. go to parties. attend AMP events. go to concerts. sing in an a cappella group. play an instrument. go to football games. go to basketball games. see comedians that are brought to campus. go to busch gardens. play mini golf. hang with your friends in your dorm… etc.

W&M students listen to all types of music and watch all types of tv. They are normal people.

as much or as little as you want. The general rule they tell you is 3 hours outside of class for each hour in class. That seems like a lot to me, so I did less. I know there are people that do (did) a lot more.
